Egyptian Billionaire Sawiris Donates To COVID-19 Fund

The Sawiris family in Egypt has donated $6.3 million to back the country’s efforts in combating the spread of COVID-19.

Sawiris Foundation for Social Development gave $2.1million to support distressed families.

The remaining $4.2 million is for government’s precautionary efforts against the novel coronavirus, a statement by the family said.

The donation came after business tycoon Naguib Sawiris was criticised for his remarks on the partial lockdown of the country.

Expressing impatience and dissatisfaction, he urged that everyday life should come back to normal.

The Chadian troops have again dealt a major blow on Boko Haram insurgents.

This followed the killing of 100 of its members in Magumeri, a local government in the northern part of Borno.

Borno is the major hotbed of Boko Haram crisis in Nigeria.

According to West Africa Reporters on Sunday, Nigerian soldiers in the sect’s captivity were freed.

It quoted sources from the Lake Chad region as saying the Chadian soldiers are hitting the Boko Haram insurgents hard.

Breaking: UK Coronavirus Death Toll Close To 5,000

The UK coronavirus death toll is now close to 5,000 after another 621 people died in the last 24 hours.

The new figure, which is lower than the record 708 deaths reported on Saturday, takes the country’s fatalities to 4,934.

Confirmed cases released by the Department of Health also jumped by 5,903.

The national total rose to 47,806 out of close to 200,000 tested for the virus.

Tokyo on Sunday recorded 143 new cases of the coronavirus, raising the number of people, who have tested positive for it, to over 1,000.

The new figure marks another record after health authorities recorded 118 new cases a day earlier, the first time that the daily caseload has risen above 100.

Local media reported that the rising caseload means Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is under increasing pressure to declare a state of emergency to slow the spread of the fast-moving virus.

Chadian troops have continued their massive bombardment of Boko Haram enclaves.

The major onslaught commenced on Sunday March 29, 2020.

Troops have been recording success to the extent that the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau, released an audio asking his fleeing fighters to remain at battlefield.

On Saturday, soldiers destroyed five bases of Boko Haram hideouts and recovered hundreds of assorted weapons.
