How Beijing Is Reigniting Hong Kong’s Protests

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters want to reignite their movement after a coronavirus lockdown lull, angered by a flurry of moves by China to subdue them.

Flashmob rallies have resurfaced in recent days and protesters are calling for a bigger show of force on Friday’s Labour Day holiday.

Violent demonstrations last year paralysed the city of seven million people for months, driven by anger over Beijing chipping away at their freedoms.

China’s communist leaders have only sought to tighten that control during the coronavirus pandemic.

Here is an explainer on how China’s latest tactics are rekindling the pro-democracy movement:

Germany Bans Hezbollah, Raids Mosques

Germany Bans Hezbollah, Raids Mosques

Germany on Thursday completely banned Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement from carrying out activities on its soil, as police raided mosques and venues linked to the group.

Like the European Union, Germany had until now only outlawed Hezbollah’s military wing while tolerating its political wing.

But in a shift immediately welcomed by the United States and Israel, the German interior ministry said it now considered the entire movement a “Shiite terrorist organisation”.

“Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation deemed responsible for numerous attacks and kidnappings worldwide,” Interior Minister Horst Seehofer told Germany’s Bild daily.

The interior minister “has banned the operation of …

France Orders 10 Metres Between Joggers, Cyclists

France’s sports ministry said Thursday that joggers and cyclists will have to stay at least 10 metres (33 feet) from one another once stay-at-home orders are lifted on May 11.

The measures are designed to prevent a surge of new coronavirus cases.

Running has become a popular way to get a break from the nationwide lockdown in place since mid-March, since short exercise jaunts close to home are among the handful of accepted reasons for being outside.

But officials have been alarmed by scenes of hundreds of runners crowding sunny sidewalks and promenades in recent weeks, leading Paris authorities to …

Intelligence agencies in the United States have concluded that the new coronavirus was “not man-made or genetically modified” but say they are still examining whether the origins of the pandemic can be traced to contact with infected animals or an accident at a Chinese lab.

The statement on Thursday from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the clearinghouse for the web of US spy agencies, comes as President Donald Trump and his allies have touted the as-yet unproven theory that an infectious disease lab in Wuhan, the epicentre of the Chinese outbreak, was the source of the global
