Governor Rotimi Akeredolu tweeted this morning he was on his way to the scene of a strange massive blast that rocked Akure, Ondo State capital overnight.

The blast, which occurred on Akure-Owo Road, was suspected to be from a meteorite

Like meteorites, the blast left a crater.

Photographs published online from the scene, at a village near Akure Airport revealed the crater.

Coronavirus cases in the United States topped 100,000 on Friday, the highest number in the world.

While Reuters put its tally at 100,040, worldometers.info estimated the U.S. cases at 100,514.

Italy is second with 86,498 and China is third with 81,340.

The United States Government has announced a 7 million dollars (about ₦2.6 billion) emergency health and humanitarian aid to Nigeria amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

This is part of a 274 million dollars (₦103 billion) assistance package to no fewer than 63 countries affected by the disease, according to a statement by the Department of States on Friday.

Nigeria’s share, the statement said, will go into funding of “risk communication, water and sanitation activities, infection prevention, and coordination’’.

Buhari Approves Decongestion Of Nigeria Prisons

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the decongestion of Correctional Service formations due to coronavirus.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, stated that the President was concerned that around seventy percent of the inmates were awaiting trial.

Umar Jibrilu, Malami’s spokesman, in a statement Friday night, recalled that Buhari had constituted a Presidential Committee for the Decongestion of the Correctional Centers.

United States President Donald Trump on Friday signed the $2.2 trillion financial package to alleviate the economic impact of coronavirus on citizens.

The signing followed House of Representatives’ approval of the bill.

The Senate had passed same on Wednesday.

“This will deliver urgently needed relief to our nation’s families, workers and businesses. And that’s what this is all about,” Trump said at a signing ceremony in the Oval Office.

The government will make $290 billion direct payments to Americans earning below $99,000 per annum.
