Turkey will no longer allow migrants to cross the Aegean sea to Greece because it is unsafe, the coastguard has said.

The order from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan comes a week after he said he was “opening the doors” for refugees to enter Europe, amid tensions over the Syrian conflict.

The EU accuses him of using migrants for political purposes. It insists its doors are “closed”.

Meanwhile, clashes have again erupted at the land border.

There appears to have been no change in Turkey’s position with regard to letting migrants try to enter Greece via this route.

Three senior members of Saudi Arabia’s royal family, including the king’s brother, have been arrested for unexplained reasons.

Two of the men were among the kingdom’s most influential figures.

The detentions are seen as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman tightening his grip on power.

In 2017 dozens of Saudi royal figures, ministers and businessmen were confined to Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel after the crown prince ordered their arrests.

Mohammed bin Salman, a controversial figure, has been considered the de facto ruler of the kingdom after he was named crown prince by his father in 2016.

The teams will still line up as usual but the home team will walk past the away side without shaking hands.

Earlier this week the government asked the Premier League to “step up its contingency planning” for coronavirus in a letter sent to club bosses.
