First Heatwave Recorded In Antarctica

Antarctica has experienced its first heatwave with scientists expressing fears about the long-term damage to animals, plants and ecosystems.

Australian Antarctic Programme scientists recorded the first reported heatwave event at Casey research station in East Antarctica during the 2019-2020 southern hemisphere summer.

Record high temperatures were also reported on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Casey recorded its the highest-ever maximum and minimum temperatures from Jan. 23 to 26.

A heatwave is classified as three consecutive days in which extremely high maximum and minimum temperatures are recorded.

A forest fire in southwest China has killed 18 firefighters and one other person.

According to the Chinese state broadcaster, CCTV, the fire also killed a local farm-worker who was leading them.

While extinguishing the flames near the Liangshan Yi Prefecture in Sichuan province, a sudden wind blew, trapping them in.

Keyamo Sends Message To DSTV, MTN, Others

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, has urged direct broadcast satellite service providers and telecoms companies, to support the fight against COVID-19.

In a series of tweets on Monday, Keyamo pleaded with DSTV and Star Times to extend existing subscriptions by one month.

“As one of the Ministers entrusted with the welfare of Nigerian workers, I politely urge @DStvNg & @StarTimes_Ng to extend all EXISTING subscriptions by at least one month, free-of-charge, as their own contribution to ease the pains of Nigerian workers at this time of lockdown,” he wrote.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday, suspended clearing of cheques in Abuja, Lagos and Ogun until further notice.

This followed the lockdown order which affects the nation’s capital and the two neighboring states.

President Muhammadu Buhari said the decision was to contain the spread of coronavirus.

He, however, exempted financial institutions, key players and their staff.

The National President of the Biafra Nations Youth League, BNYL, Princewill Chimezie Richard has tested positive for COVID-19.

The group made this known in a statement on Monday by BNYL Press Secretary, Richard Dianabasi.

Dianabasi said the BNYL leader tested positive because he received his brother who returned from Sweden days ago “and who also tested positive at a quarantine unit in Lagos.”

The group also accused President Muhammadu Buhari of doing a video record for national address, adding that it does not depict the character of a good leader.

Buhari Signs COVID-19 Act After Outcry, Lawsuit Threats

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, signed the COVID-19 Regulations, 2020.

The Act declared coronavirus a dangerous infectious disease.

The signing was contained in a statement by Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina.

It said the president relied on powers conferred on him by Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Quarantine Act (CAP Q2 LFN 2004).

The Regulations, effective March 30, 2020, also gave legal backing to the various measures outlined in the President’s National Broadcast on March 29, 2020.

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced commencement of evacuation of its citizens from Nigeria.

This is due to the coronavirus outbreak which has killed 35,000 people worldwide.

Interested citizens were said to have indicated readiness to leave the country to be with their loved ones back home.
