France Slams €30m Fine On E/Guinean President’s Son

The playboy son of Equatorial Guinea’s leader was handed a 30-million-euro fine by a Paris court Monday on top of a suspended jail term and the confiscation of his assets for embezzling public funds.

Teodorin Obiang, the son of Equatorial Guinea’s leader Teodoro Obiang Nguema, was found guilty in 2017 of having plundered his country’s state coffers to fund a jet-set lifestyle in Europe.

At the time, he was handed a three-year jail term as well as the 30-million-euro ($32.9 million) fine — both suspended.

NTA Loan: Reno Omokri Blasts Buhari

Reno Omokri, the former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari over his administration’s plan to borrow $500m to digitize the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA).

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed during a Senate hearing on Monday, had said if the request is granted it will make the media house compete with the likes of CNN.

Reacting to this new development, Reno expressed that the loan is dubious. He went further to express that NTA is not worth the amount to be borrowed.

CBN Injects $218.41m, CNY 18m Into Forex Market

In line with its intervention in the interbank foreign exchange (forex) market, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the weekend, injected the sum of $218.41million into the retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) and CNY 18million in the spot and short-tenored forwards segment of the inter-bank forex market.

 

The bank’s Director, Corporate Communications Department, Isaac Okorafor disclosed that the intervention, like in previous exercises, was for requests in the agricultural and raw materials sectors, adding that the Chinese Yuan, on the other hand, was for Renminbi-denominated Letters of Credit.
