Former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, says 20 years after the return of civilian government, the foundation of democracy remains shaky.

He called on political leaders in the country to continue to work for the sustenance of democracy.

Dickson, represented by his former Commissioner for Information, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, spoke on Friday in Abuja at his lecture entitled: “Election, Good Governance and Democracy in Nigeria”.

The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba (Dr.) Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi has dismissed his suspension by the Osun State Traditional Council, saying it is ‘audio’ a street slang for ‘fake’.

Michel Platini revealed on Friday he is considering a return to football as the former UEFA president bids to restore his tarnished reputation following his ban from the game.

Mexico Extradites Son Of Drug Kingpin To US

The Mexican Government, on Friday extradited the son of one of the country’s most-wanted drug lords to the U.S., Public Security Minister Alfonso Durazo said.

Ruben Gonzalez, 30, is the son of Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho”, who heads the powerful cartel Jalisco New Generation and is accused of large-scale drug trafficking into the U.S.

“Gonzalez has since been delivered to the U.S. authorities,” Durazo said.

South Korea, Japan Set Date For Talks Over Trade Row

South Korea on Friday said it would hold talks with Japan in March in its latest attempt to resolve the two countries’ months long trade row.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Lee Ho-hyeon, South Korea’s Director-General for International Trade Policy, is set to meet with his Japanese counterpart, Yoichi Iida, in Seoul on March 10.

In December, the two neighbours held their first Director-General-level talks since 2016, but failed to make progress toward loosening their export control systems.

France Shuts Down Its Oldest Nuclear Power Plant

France was due to start the shutdown of its oldest nuclear power plant, at Fessenheim across the Rhine from Germany, on Friday night, German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze said.

One of the plant’s two reactors, first linked to the country’s power grid in 1977, was due to be shut down in a process that would last into early Saturday morning.

The second plant scheduled to follow suit on June 30.

The move is the first in a programme to shut down 14 of France’s 58 nuclear reactors by 2035.

About 10,000 people, according to police estimate, on Friday joined Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, at a protest in the Northern German city of Hamburg.

Sketchy details emerged on Friday on why Governor Godwin Obaseki revoked the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) granted to a property on plot 103A Aiguobasimwin Crescent, GRA, Benin, belonging to a former Delta Governor, James Ibori.

Gov. Tambuwal To Give Women Interest-Free Loans

The Sokoto State government, through its Giginya Microfinance Bank, will be offering interest-free loans to about 1,800 women in the state.

The 1,800 women will be selected out of 6,000 persons, to benefit from the state government’s N500 million interest-free loans.

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, who made the disclosure in Sokoto on Friday, while inaugurating the Giginya Microfinance Bank, said that the scheme was aimed at fast-tracking small businesses in the state.
