Bill Supporting Rehab Of B’Haram Helps Insurgency

Ali Ndume, Senator representing Borno South in the National Assembly, has rejected the newly introduced bill aimed at creating an agency for repentant Boko Haram insurgents.

Ndume, who is the Chairman Senate Committee on Army, said the bill was indirectly asking more Nigerians to team up with the terrorist group.

The lawmaker stated that the bill will swell the ranks of Boko Haram because they are sure of rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Recall that the National Agency for Education, Rehabilitation, De-radicalisation and Integration of repentant insurgents in Nigeria was sponsored by Senator Ibrahim Gaidam representing Yobe East Senatorial District

In Portugal, One Can Now Die When He Wants

The Portuguese parliament has approved five government legislative proposals to legalize euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide for the terminally sick in the country.

The five proposals were presented Thursday by ruling Socialist Party (PS in Portuguese), Left Block (BE), People Animals Nature party (PAN), The Greens (PEV) and Liberal Initiative (IL).

In the 230-seat parliament, 223 lawmakers took part in the voting.

The proposal from the PS received 127 votes in favour and 86 against.

Buhari Govt Warned Against External Borrowing

A Professor of Financial Economics, Prof. Ndubisi Nwokoma has warned President Muhammadu Buhari led government against external borrowing.

Nwokoma, Director, Centre for Economic Policy Analysis and Research, University of Lagos, gave the warning in reaction to plans by the government to approach China for a $17 billion loan.

 

“Borrowing would be relatively harmless if it is tied to projects and are efficiently managed.

“Nigeria’s borrowing history is not salutary and debt service payments, even now, have been putting significant pressure on revenue.

“Nigeria is in a debt trap and should be cautious in procuring more debts,’’ Nwokoma said.

Boko Haram Repentant Members Not Recruited – Army

The Coordinator, Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC), Maj.-Gen Bamidele Shafa, has debunked reports that repentant members of “Boko Haram” have been enrolled into the Nigeria military.

Shafa in an interview with newsmen after a visit to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, explained that the military is a professional body, which abides strictly to rules and regulations regarding recruitment.

UNICEF Begins Implementation Of Child-Friendly Initiative

The United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) says it has commenced a programme aimed at promoting the health and protection of the rights of children in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

UNICEF tagged the programme “Child-Friendly Communities Initiative (CFCI)”.

Mr Bhanu Pathak, the UNICEF Chief Field Officer, in charge of Bauchi, disclosed this on Wednesday while addressing participants at a one-day inception meeting in Bauchi.
