Trump Threatens Intelligence Block Over Huawei

The United States’ ambassador to Germany said Sunday that President Donald Trump had threatened to cut off intelligence-sharing with countries that dealt with Chinese tech firm Huawei.

Washington has been pressing allies to ban Huawei, one of the world’s largest tech firms, from next-generation 5G mobile data networks, saying it is a security risk.

Ambassador Richard Grenell said Trump “instructed me to make clear that any nation who chooses to use an untrustworthy 5G vendor will jeopardize our ability to share intelligence and information at the highest level.”

Japan has suffered its worst quarterly GDP contraction in more than five years, with a tax hike and a deadly typhoon taking a toll on the world’s third-largest economy.

The nation’s gross domestic product in the three months to December shrank 1.6 percent from the previous quarter, even before the novel coronavirus outbreak in China hit Japan, according to official data published on Monday.

US Farmer Wins Damages Over Bayer AG, BASF Herbicide

A US jury has awarded $265 million to a Missouri farmer who blamed herbicide from chemical giants Bayer AG and BASF for destroying his peach orchards, in a case set to bolster 140 other lawsuits.

Jurors in federal court in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, made the ruling on Saturday after peach farmer Bill Bader claimed the companies encouraged farmers to use the dicamba weedkiller irresponsibly.

Bloomberg News reported that the case was the first US trial over dicamba herbicide, which is alleged to have wrecked crops across America’s Midwest by drifting onto plants that were unable to resist it.

Coronavirus Could Damage Global Growth In 2020: IMF

The coronavirus epidemic could damage global economic growth this year, the IMF head said Sunday, but a sharp and rapid economic rebound could follow.

“There may be a cut that we are still hoping would be in the 0.1-0.2 percentage space,” the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, told the Global Women’s Forum in Dubai.

Six JAMB Staff Kidnapped In Kogi

 

The Lokoja-Obajana-Kabba Road in Kogi State has become the kidnappers and bandits play field, as six staff of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), were abducted by gunmen on Sunday.

A staff of JAMB, who confirmed the abduction, said that the victims, were from the head office in Abuja, and were headed to Kogi West, in preparation for the mock UTME exams.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, however declined to give more details, while all efforts to get confirmation from the Kogi State Police Command proved abortive, as at the time of filing this report.

Court Rejects Fayose’s Move To Stop Witness Against Him

The Federal High Court in Lagos has rejected move by ex-Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, and a firm, Spotless Investment Ltd to stop a banker from testifying against him in his ₦2.2bn fraud trial.

According to Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, Fayose’s application lacked merit, saying that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) could field one banker – Mr Johnson Abidakun, as its witness against the former governor.

Abidakun will testify in place of a bullion van driver, Adewale Aladegbola, who testified when the case was before another judge.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana said President Muhammadu Buhari has breached the law by not terminating the appointment of the current security Service Chiefs.

Mr Falana, who appeared on Channels TV Sunrise Daily on Monday, argued that the laws regulating military officers require the retirement of military officers who have served for 35 years or have reached the age of 60.

Tokyo 2020 organisers on Monday rolled out the motto for this year’s Olympics, “United by Emotion”, which they said reflected the “universal values” and “unifying power of sport”.

“Crowds of spectators who do not know each other prior to the Games will come together and learn that there is more that unites them than divides them,” Tokyo 2020 said as it unveiled the motto.
