Rocket Attack Hits Near US Embassy In Iraq Capital

Multiple rockets hit an Iraqi base hosting American troops near the US embassy early Sunday, the latest in a flurry of attacks against US assets in the country.

“The Coalition confirms small rockets impacted the Iraqi base hosting (coalition) troops in the International Zone… No casualties,” said coalition spokesman Myles Caggins.

That base, known as Union III, is the headquarters for the US-led coalition, deployed in Iraq since 2014 to help local troops fight the Islamic State jihadist group.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Saturday the league expects to lose “several hundred million dollars” due to a row with China over a tweet by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey supporting Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters.

The NBA’s Chinese sponsors cut ties in a fierce mainland backlash following Morey’s tweet in October, just before two NBA teams played pre-season exhibition matches in China.

State broadcaster CCTV also stopped airing NBA games for the country’s millions of ardent basketball fans and has not resumed.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) of the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja has condemned an assault on one of its members while on call on Saturday.

The Association in a statement signed by its President, Dr Adejo Arome and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, threatened to take necessary action if security agencies did not prosecute the perpetrators.

Unknown gunmen on Sunday abducted Alhaji Jibrin Giza, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works in Nasarawa State.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Bola Longe, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that Giza was abducted by gunmen from his residence at Shabu, a suburb of Lafia at about 12:40 am., to an unknown destination.

Fire Guts Apongbon Market In Lagos

The popular Apongbon market in Lagos Island was gutted by fire on Sunday morning.

The Ebute Ero Underbridge section of the market went up in flames around 10:45pm.

Shops and property were affected and efforts are on to stop the spread.

The cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet.

The Lagos State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), among others are at the scene.

The incident occurred a few weeks after the fire outbreak at the popular Balogun Market in Lagos.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced the recruitment of 2,079 new officers.

Political old warhorse and firebrand, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has accused former governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau of foisting the Hisbah corps on the people of the state.

Hisbah is an Islamic doctrine which means “accountability”. Hisbah is an individual or collective duty to intervene and “enjoin good and forbid wrong.” The doctrine is reportedly based on an expression from the Quran.
