U.S. Jobless Claims Rise To 205,000

A report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday revealed that the number of initial jobless claims in the United States had risen to 205,000.

According to the report, the number of people filing for U.S. unemployment benefits increased by 2,000 to 205,000 from the previous week’s revised figure in the week ending February 8.

Meanwhile, the previous week’s level was revised up by 1,000 from 202,000 to 203,000, the bureau noted.

The report also showed that the four-week moving average of initial claims, a method to iron out data volatility, remained flat at 212,000.

A U.S. judge on Thursday granted Amazon.com Inc’s request to temporarily halt the U.S. Department of Defense and Microsoft Corp from moving forward on an up-to-$10 billion cloud computing deal.

Amazon filed suit in November alleging that President Donald Trump, who has publicly derided Amazon head Jeff Bezos and repeatedly criticised the company, exerted undue influence on the decision to deny it the contract.

Bezos also owns the Washington Post, whose coverage has been critical of Trump and which has frequently been a target of barbs by Trump about the news media.

US Republican Senators Join Democrats To Wipe War Powers

The US Senate voted Thursday to rein in President Donald Trump from attacking Iran, sharply rebuking his foreign policy despite acquitting him last week in his impeachment trial.

Eight senators of Trump’s Republican Party, which enjoys a majority, bucked their leadership to join Democrats, following a classified Iran session by the Trump administration that one Republican called the worst briefing he had ever witnessed.
