Matthew Kukah, Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese, says Nigeria is on the crossroads and its future hangs “precariously” in a balance.

Kukah said this in Kaduna during his homily at the funeral mass of Michael Nnadi, a student of the Catholic Good Shepherd Seminary, Kaduna, who was abducted and subsequently murdered.

Gunmen had invaded the seminary on January 8, abducting four students, including Nnadi. Three of the students were released after a ransom was paid, but Nnadi did not make it out alive.

Some soldiers at the war front in the north-east have expressed disappointment over the release of 1,400 ”repentant” Boko Haram suspects.

Babakura Jato, commissioner of information in Borno state, on Monday said that 1,400 had been released in three tranches since Operation Safe Corridor programme was launched.

Operation Safe Corridor is an initiative for the deradicalisation and rehabilitation of all ex-Boko Haram members.

Jato said the majority of them are cleared suspects.

CBN To Stop Burning Banknotes, Adopts Recycling

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it will end the process of burning banknotes and adopt recycling.

In a document published on its website, the apex bank called on recycling companies to submit proposals for a contract to recycle wasted banknotes.

“Section 18(d) of the CBN act 2007 authorises the apex bank to arrange for the destruction of currency notes and coins withdrawn from circulation under the provision of section 20(3) of the said act or otherwise found by the bank to be unfit for use,” the call for proposal read.
