Japan Cruise Ship Virus Cases Climb To 174

Another 39 people aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan have tested positive for the new coronavirus, authorities said Wednesday, as thousands more steel themselves for a second week in quarantine.

With 174 confirmed cases, the ship that arrived with over 3,700 passengers and crew has become the largest single cluster of the newly named COVID-19 virus outside its origin in China, where it has killed more than 1,100.

SoftBank Group Nine-Month Net Profit Down Nearly 70%

Major Japanese technology investor SoftBank Group said Wednesday its net profit plunged nearly 70 percent for the nine months to December as investments in sharing economy companies including WeWork and Uber took a hit.

Bottom-line profit fell 69.0 percent to 476.6 billion yen ($4.3 billion) for the period, as the firm suffered an operating loss of 13.0 billion yen.

The operating loss was largely “due to a decrease in the fair values of investments including Uber and WeWork and its three affiliates,” the company said in a statement.

Political ad spending is surging for the US election, with digital campaigns — led by Facebook — accounting for nearly one-fifth of the total, researchers said Wednesday.

A report by eMarketer predicted total campaign media spending jumping 63 percent from four years ago to $6.89 billion, attributing the rise to the “intensity” of the presidential race as well as many congressional contests.

The forecast for the 2019-2020 election cycle covers spending on federal, state and local ads, including political action committee ads for candidates and lobbying activities.

The national merit award winner (OON) clocked 89 years on December 31, 2019.

Esho said Olaiya passed away at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Wednesday afternoon.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Joseph Yobo as Super Eagles’ Assistant Coach.

Yobo replaces Imama Amapakabo who was standing in for Salisu Yusuf, TVC reports.

DAIlY POST recalls that the former Enyimba and Kano Pillars coach was found guilty of receiving an amount of money reported to be around $1000.

Yusuf was caught collecting money to influence his team’s selection for the 2017 WAFU Cup in Ghana.
