Imo PDP Accuses APC Of Masterminding Orlu INEC Fire

The Peoples Democratic Party in Imo state has condemned the recent fire outbreak that razed the INEC office in Orlu LGA of Imo state, describing it as a major characteristics associated with the All Progressives Congress.

According to a press release signed by the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Damian Opara and made available to newsmen, the APC in the state is reputed for political brigandage and other social vices that have negative commentary on the state in the last eight years of the party’s misrule.

Zamfara: Kidnappers Free Districts Head, Holds Back Son

A district Head of Gayari town in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Alhaji Hassan Mohammed kidnapped by notorious kidnappers in the district has regained his freedom.

The kidnappers, however, did not release his son , Yasir Mohammed , who was also kidnapped along with his father last Saturday .

One of the members of Mohammed ’s family, Farouq Gayari , told newsmen in Gusau, the state capital that the kidnappers were paid a ransom of N5 million as against the N40m they had earlier demanded for the release of the father and son.

Zamfara: Ex-Governor, Yari Speaks On Alleged Detention

Ex-Governor of Zamfara State, Abdullaziz Yari on Wednesday confirmed that he only honoured an invitation by the Police, but was never detained.

In a statement by the former governors’ Media Aide, Mr. Mayowa Oluwabiyi which was made available to DAILY POST, Yari debunked the insinuation that he was arrested and detained by the Police.

Yari said it was the handiwork of mischief makers and political traducers who would stop at nothing to see that he was unnecessarily disturbed.

ASUU Hints On Nationwide Strike Again

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday hinted on embarking on a nationwide strike.

Chairman of the University of Jos chapter of ASUU, Dr Lazarus Maigoro disclosed that the union was currently mobilising its members in a bid to embark on strike because government has failed to meet its demands.

He made the claim while dismissing insinuations that the union was insensitive to the plight of students and parents by constantly embarking on strikes.

On 9 February over six million Cameroonians will be called to vote in twin legislative and municipal elections. Namibian Nurses To Work In Germany

 

HEALTH minister Kalumbi Shangula has welcomed the employment of 16 nurses at Germany’s Dusseldorf’s university hospital.

This comes in light of Germany’s need to fill 60 000 nurses posts through employment agencies, that country’s state-owned media group, Deutsche Welle (DW) recently reported.

The minister said the process of choosing which nurses were to go to Germany was not done through the ministry but was done through individual efforts.

Rwanda: Heavy Rains – Death Toll Rises To 19

 

The number of confirmed deaths from torrential rains across the country since Sunday has risen to 19 after authorities initially put the number at 13 on Sunday, February 2.

The toll rose partly as a result of another downpour on Monday, February 4, after the Emergency Ministry announced the initial damages.

The downpour in Kigali started around 6:30 pm on Sunday evening and lasted nearly four hours. It was almost the same in different other parts of the country, but according to Rwanda Meteorology Agency, it had started earlier in districts like Gicumbi and Nyaruguru.

Kenya Releases Names of 14 Pupils Killed In Stampede

Kakamega Primary School has released the names of 14 pupils who perished in a deadly stampede on Monday evening.

One of the victims – Grade Four pupil Naila Kiverenge – will be laid to rest Wednesday afternoon.

Funeral arrangements for the rest of the victims are going on with the help of a team formed by Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

The other 13 victims of the tragedy are expected to be buried next week.

Morocco: Crackdown On Social Media Critics

 

Moroccan authorities have since September 2019 arrested and prosecuted at least 10 activists, artists, or other citizens who did nothing but peacefully express critical opinions via Facebook posts, YouTube videos, or rap songs, Human Rights Watch and the Moroccan Association for Human Rights said today. The authorities should immediately free those who are being detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression and drop the charges.

Libya: Military Talks To End Libya Fighting Underway

Geneva — U.N.-sponsored military and security talks aimed at achieving a lasting cease-fire in Libya are underway in Geneva. The negotiations are held as Libya’s warring parties continue to violate a temporary truce agreed to in mid-January.

Five high-ranking officers appointed by the Government of National Accord in Libya and five other high-ranking military officers appointed by rebel commander Khalifa Haftar are in attendance. This is the first time ever that high-ranking officers from both sides are getting together to talk peace.

Mbabane — Africa’s inability to produce adequate skills is negatively impacting its economic growth.

In fact, the continent is not getting a good return even on the minimal investment it is making in education, says Thembinkosi Dlamini, an economist and senior extractives lead at Oxfam South Africa.
