South Korea Virus Cases Surge As WHO Sounds Maximum Alert

South Korea reported its biggest surge in new coronavirus cases on Saturday as concerns grew of a possible epidemic in the United States and the World Health Organization raised its risk alert to its highest level.

Luxembourg Becomes First Country With Free Transport

Luxembourg on Saturday became the first country in the world to offer free public transport, as the small and wealthy EU country tries to help less-well-off workers and reduce road traffic.

Some cities elsewhere have already taken similar, partial measures. But the transport ministry said it was the first time such a decision covered an entire country.

The free transport, flagged as “an important social measure”, affects approximately 40 percent of households and is estimated to save each one around 100 euros ($110) per year.

26 Syrian Troops Killed In Retaliatory Turkish Strikes

Turkish drone strikes killed 26 Syrian soldiers on Saturday, an independent war monitor said, after Ankara warned Damascus that it would “pay a price” for killing dozens of Turkish troops on its soil.

The Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights said the strikes “targeted positions of the regime forces in the Idlib and Aleppo countryside”.

Coronavirus Lands In Ecuador

Ecuador has confirmed the first case of a fast-spreading new coronavirus in the Andean country, its health minister said on Saturday.

The patient is an elderly female Ecuadorean residing in Spain, Catalina Andramuño, the health minister, told reporters.

The patient arrived in Ecuador on Feb. 14 on a direct flight from Madrid without showing any symptoms, but soon fell ill and went to a hospital where she was diagnosed with the coronavirus.
