Akpeyi Saves Penalty As Leaders Kaizer Chiefs Escape

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi saved a penalty as the South African league leaders survived a second-half onslaught from Maritzburg United to force a 1-1 draw Sunday.

The 33-year-old Nigerian dived to his right and used both hands to push a Daylon Claasen spot-kick onto the post and away to safety midway through the second half.

Both goals came before half-time at Harry Gwala Stadium in eastern city Pietermaritzburg with Lebogang Manyama putting Chiefs ahead and Judas Moseamedi equalising.

Chiefs, seeking a first trophy in five seasons, go into a mid-season break with 35 points from 14 matches, seven …

Pogba Named As Sub For Man United At Watford

Fit-again Paul Pogba was named among the Manchester United substitutes for their Premier League game at Watford on Sunday.

The France midfielder has been missing since September 30 following a combination of an ankle injury and illness but was included in the squad that travelled.

United’s preparations were disrupted as their team coach arrived at Vicarage Road less than an hour before the 1400 GMT kick-off.

Nigel Pearson named an unchanged XI for his first home game in charge of bottom side Watford as he looked to build on a strong display in a defeat to league-leaders Liverpool last …

Ilicic Nets Twice As Atalanta Destroy AC Milan

Slovenia international Josip Ilicic scored two terrific goals as Atalanta demolished AC Milan 5-0 in Serie A on Sunday to climb up to fifth.

Atalanta captain Papu Gomez fired the hosts ahead on 10 minutes when he gathered the ball on the left wing and drifted into the area before blasting beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Mario Pasalic, on loan from Chelsea, added a second on the hour in Bergamo when he flicked in a flashing drive from Robin Gosens.

Ilicic made it 3-0 with a clinical finish after a Pasalic assist and the Slovenian attacker struck again on 72 minutes when …

Saturday saw the Merseyside team announce that Ancelotti had become their new permanent manager on a four-and-a-half year contract.

The 60-year-old then watched from the stands at Goodison Park as Everton played out a goalless draw with Arsenal, who have appointed former Toffees favourite Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

“I’m excited to be here at one of the greatest clubs in England,” Ancelotti told the club’s in-house TV channel in his first …

Solskjaer Defends De Gea, Slams United After Watford Loss

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came to the defence of David De Gea after the goalkeeper’s blunder proved pivotal in a 2-0 loss away to Premier League bottom side Watford on Sunday.

The Vicarage Road clash was still goalless when De Gea somehow allowed a tame, spinning effort from Ismaila Sarr to creep through his hands and in at the near post.

Watford doubled their lead four minutes later when Troy Deeney fired home from the penalty spot after Aaron Wan-Bissaka brought down Sarr with a misjudged sliding tackle and not even the returning Paul Pogba, on as a …

Williams was an usher at the wedding before driving to the match in Swansea, where he helped create the Blues’ only try in their 19-16 win on Saturday.

The 24-year-old then returned to the reception in Treorchy (35 miles; 56km away).

“That’s what rugby means to him,” Mulvihill told the BBC.

Lampard Out-Wits Mourinho, But Racism Scars Chelsea Win

Frank Lampard out-witted Jose Mourinho as Chelsea powered to a 2-0 win at Tottenham on Sunday that featured a double from Willian, a red card for Son Heung-min and allegations of racist abuse.

Billed as a showdown between Mourinho and Lampard, an explosive London derby showed the student is more than a match for the man who served as his mentor during their time together at Chelsea.

Blues boss Lampard pulled a tactical masterstroke as he cleverly changed his team’s formation, leaving Tottenham manager Mourinho unable to respond as Willian opened the scoring with a blistering strike and increased Chelsea’s …

Strugglers Duesseldorf, Earn Wins To Ease Relegation Fears

Bundesliga bottom side Paderborn and fellow strugglers Fortuna Duesseldorf earned valuable home wins Sunday to boost their survival hopes.

A wonderful 90th-minute strike by substitute Erik Thommy gave Duesseldorf their first Bundesliga win since early November and sealed a 2-1 victory over Union Berlin.

Thommy came on midway through the second-half and with time almost up, the midfielder casually turned his marker and unleashed a fierce shot which crashed in off the far post.

His superb strike gave Union goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz no chance.

It was heart-breaking for the Polish shot-stopper who had produced a reflex save to deny
