Zidane Says Guardiola ‘Best Coach In The World’

Zinedine Zidane insisted Saturday his key aim this season was to win La Liga with Real Madrid, but admitted they faced a thrilling challenge trying to outwit Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, who they meet in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Zidane, who has won three Champions Leagues as a coach compared to Guardiola’s two, described the Catalan as “the best coach in the world”.

The two sides meet in Madrid on February 26 before heading to Manchester for the second leg on March 17.

Everton Pull Off Ambitious Chase Of Ancelotti

Everton appointed Carlo Ancelotti as the Toffees’ new manager on a four-and-a-half year deal on Saturday in a major coup for a club mired in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Ancelotti, 60, watched Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal from the stands at Goodison Park. He will take charge for the first time on Boxing Day for visit of Burnley.

The three-time Champions League winning coach was sacked by Napoli earlier this month but comes with a trophy-laden CV from spells at a clutch of Europe’s top clubs, including Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and …

‘Not Good Enough’ Pollard Costs Montpellier On Top 14 Debut

South Africa Rugby World Cup winner Handre Pollard wasted eight points from the boot on his French Top 14 debut as Montpellier lost 29-25 at Racing 92 on Saturday.

Fly-half Pollard, who had been sidelined with a facial injury since lifting the Webb Ellis trophy on November 2, missed two penalties and a conversion which would have been enough for his side to secure their first away win of the season.

“I’m always disappointed whenever I miss a kick, there were a couple of tough ones in there. I expect from myself to kick those over,” he said.

“Nothing Speaks Against” Flick Staying On As Bayern Coach

Hansi Flick is set to remain head coach of Bayern Munich until the end of the season after club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said Saturday that “nothing speaks against it”.

The 54-year-old was made interim boss for Bayern’s remaining games of 2019 when Niko Kovac was sacked in early November.

Under Flick, Bayern have won eight of their last ten games, including Saturday’s 2-0 victory at home to Wolfsburg ahead of the Bundesliga winter break.

“There is absolutely nothing to be said against it,” Rummenigge told Sky when asked if Flick is likely to be kept on until May.

Martin Peters, who scored England’s second goal in the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany, has died aged 76 following a long battle against Alzheimer’s disease.

Peters, whose death was announced by former club West Ham, was part of the Hammers trio of captain Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 4-2 victory at Wembley, for England’s only World Cup triumph.

Hurst described Peters as “one of the all-time greats”.

“On behalf of everyone at West Ham United, we would like to express our deep sadness at the tragic loss of Martin Peters, one of …

Barcelona go into the brief Spanish winter break on top of La Liga after a glittering show from Lionel Messi helped the defending champions beat Alaves 4-1 on Saturday.

Real Madrid, who drew 0-0 at Camp Nou in the midweek Clasico, can draw level top on 39 points but behind on goal difference if they win at home to Atletico Bilbao on Sunday.

Leipzig Keep Top Spot In Germany After Comeback Win

Timo Werner warns there is more to come from RB Leipzig, who enter the Bundesliga winter break in first place after coming from behind to claim a 3-1 home win against Augsburg on Saturday.

The German league is put on hold for a month from Sunday onwards and Leipzig’s hard-fought home win left them two points clear in the table.

“Many teams do not yet know what we are capable of – we can do much more,” warned Germany striker Werner, who has scored 18 goals in 17 league games.

Leipzig fell behind after just eight minutes when Augsburg’s top-scoring …

Lasting Legacy Not Trophy-Hunting Drives Djokovic

Novak Djokovic says the main source of his motivation at this stage of his career is securing a lasting legacy rather than simply trying to win tennis matches and trophies.

For nearly two years, from mid-2016 until mid-2018, the 32-year-old Serb had admittedly struggled with motivation after pulling off the historic feat of winning four Grand Slams in a row –- a first in men’s tennis since 1969.

Djokovic recaptured his spark and has since added a quartet of majors to his overall tally, which now stands at 16.

While the world number two remains in a tight battle with …

Man City Keep Faint Title Hopes Alive, Everton Draws

Manchester City hit back to beat Leicester 3-1 as the champions kept alive their faint hopes of catching Premier League leaders Liverpool, while Carlo Ancelotti and Mikel Arteta got a glimpse of the problems that lie ahead as Everton and Arsenal shared a dreadful 0-0 draw on Saturday.

City have been left trailing in Liverpool’s wake this term and a defeat against second-placed Leicester would have been a fatal blow to their bid for a third successive title.

But goals from Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus gave Pep Guardiola’s side a win that moved them within 11 points …

Esposito Breaks 60-Year Record As Inter Go Top

Sebastiano Esposito became Inter Milan’s youngest scorer in more than 60 years on Saturday when he hit the target in a 4-0 romp against Genoa, helping his side return to the top of Serie A.

The 17-year-old put away a second-half penalty which made him the youngest Inter scorer since Mario Corso in 1958.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice with Roberto Gagliardini adding another as Inter moved level with champions Juventus at the top on 42 points.

Juve had taken top spot on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria before heading to Saudi Arabia where they face Lazio in the

Firmino Extra-Time Goal Wins Club World Cup For Liverpool

Roberto Firmino was again the hero for Liverpool as the forward’s extra-time goal allowed Jurgen Klopp’s side to beat Flamengo 1-0 in the Club World Cup final in Doha on Saturday and lift the trophy for the first time.

Firmino was picked out by Sadio Mane and waited for goalkeeper Diego Alves to commit before slotting low into the net in the 99th minute of an absorbing contest at the Khalifa International Stadium.

It was the moment that finally punctured the hopes of the Brazilian side and their vibrant support, after Liverpool had been denied a penalty by VAR at
