A Chilean military plane with 38 people aboard has gone missing after it took off from the country’s south for a base in Antarctica and is presumed to have crashed, authorities have said.

Seventeen of those on board the C-130 aircraft were crew and the others were passengers, Chile’s air force said Monday.

The plane is believed to have crashed and “all national and international air and maritime means available in the area are continuing the search (for survivors) in the sector where communications were lost with the aircraft,” it added in a statement Tuesday.

Nissan Faces $22Million Fine For Misreporting Ghosn Pay

Nissan should be fined $22 million for filing documents that under-reported the compensation of former chief Carlos Ghosn, Japanese regulators recommended Tuesday, with troubled the firm saying it would not dispute the penalty.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SESC) made the recommendation as Ghosn, who was arrested in November last year, awaits trial in Tokyo on four charges of financial misconduct.

Among the allegations against him are claims that he under-reported his compensation from 2010 to 2018, deferring some of his pay and failing to declare it to shareholders.

Ghosn denies all the charges against him and has argued there …

Democrats Announce Two Impeachment Charges Against Trump

Democrats unveiled two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump on Tuesday in a momentous step asserting that the US president abused his office and deserves to be removed.

If the charges — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — are approved by the full House of Representatives in a vote expected next week, it would make Trump the third US leader ever impeached and placed on trial in the Senate.

An angry Trump dismissed the charges as “ridiculous” but Democrats insisted presidents are not untouchable.

“We must be clear: No one, not even the president, is above the law,” …

Toxic Bushfire Haze Blankets Eastern Australia

Toxic haze blanketed Sydney Tuesday triggering a chorus of smoke alarms to ring across the city and forcing school children inside, as “severe” weather conditions fuelled deadly bush blazes along Australia’s east coast.

Fire engines raced office-to-office in the city centre with sirens blaring, as inland bushfires poured smoke laden with toxic particles into commercial buildings.

Emergency services responded to an “unprecedented” 500 automatic call-outs inside a few hours according to New South Wales Fire and Rescue’s Roger Mentha.

A regional fire headquarters miles from the nearest blazes was itself evacuated while throngs of mask-wearing commuters choked their way through

Gunman Kills Himself After Deadly Czech Hospital Rampage

A gunman killed himself Tuesday after shooting dead six patients at a hospital in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava, in what the premier has called “an immense tragedy”.

The attacker gunned down people at close range at the trauma ward of the Faculty Hospital in Ostrava, a steel hub located some 300 kilometres (190 miles) east of Prague.

Four men and two women died during the assault, which police said lasted only a few seconds.

Two other people were seriously wounded — one is in a critical condition after being shot in the head and the other is …

Protests Rage In Northeast India Over Citizenship Bill

Protestors in northeast India set fire to tyres and cut down trees to block roads on Tuesday in a shutdown across the region hours after lawmakers approved the government’s new citizenship bill.

The legislation, set to go before the upper house on Wednesday, will fast-track citizenship claims from immigrants from three neighbouring countries — but not if they are Muslim.

For Islamic groups, the opposition, rights groups and others this fits into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist agenda to marginalise India’s 200 million Muslims — something he denies.

People in northeast India object for different reasons, fearing that large …

Abuse Of Power Charges Unveiled In Trump Impeachment

Democrats unveiled two impeachment charges against US President Donald Trump Tuesday, accusing him of abuse of power and obstruction in pressuring Ukraine to help him attack his 2020 election rivals.

The charges, if approved by the House of Representatives in a vote expected next week, would make Trump only the third US president to be impeached and placed on trial in the Senate.

“Our president holds the ultimate public trust,” said Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Medic, Driver, Witness, Baker: 4 Faces Of Iraqi’s Uprising

Tears roll out from behind Ayat’s oversized glasses but her hands, facing the sky, are steady. Her friends are gone, killed protesting Iraq’s government, but their “revolution” continues.

“Peace be upon you and on your two rivers, Iraq,” sings Kazem Saher as young demonstrators mourn their peers in the epicentre of the anti-regime movement in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square.

They stand sombre and motionless under the imposing “Liberty Monument,” as if mirroring the bronze figures on the long marble slab above them retelling Iraq’s tumultuous history.

Ayat, a medic, is but one of the characters in this new chapter, along …

Russia’s Top Diplomat Opens US Talks Amid Impeachment

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday opened a visit to Washington in which he will meet Donald Trump, the very day when Democrats unveiled impeachment charges against the president.

The timing marks a redux of the veteran Russian diplomat’s last visit to Washington in May 2017, when Trump was fighting off allegations that he cooperated with Russia and was accused of sharing classified information with Lavrov.

Lavrov began the day of talks by meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who said the Trump administration was determined to pursue its work despite the politics at home.

“We didn’t …
