Tiger Woods’ ‘Aura’ Has Dimmed, Says Presidents Cup Rival

Ernie Els on Wednesday said Tiger Woods has lost some of his aura but the skipper of the International team will not be under-estimating his superstar counterpart at the Presidents Cup next week.

Woods is captaining and playing for the United States at the biennial matchplay showdown at Royal Melbourne, and one of Els’ key decisions will be who plays the 15-time major-winner in the singles on Sunday.

The big South African has seven rookies in his 12-man team, but he also has a core of experienced players such as Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.

Els said he …

‘Hungry’ Joshua Says No Celebration If He Beats Ruiz

Anthony Joshua said Wednesday he will not celebrate if he regains his world heavyweight title, as he faced off with rival Andy Ruiz in a final press conference before their controversial rematch in Saudi Arabia.

Joshua seeks to win back the IBF, WBA and WBO titles that he lost to Ruiz in a shock June defeat in New York in a high-profile duel on Saturday, dubbed “Clash on the Dunes”.

The British boxer, 30, said he was “hungry, determined and focused” as he appeared alongside Ruiz in a press conference in Diriyah, close to the Saudi capital Riyadh.

Harden Dunk Debacle Confounds Rockets

Officials admitted they got it wrong in disallowing a James Harden dunk in Houston’s double-overtime loss to San Antonio, but it wasn’t clear Wednesday if the NBA would grant the Rockets a replay they reportedly want.

Rockets star Harden soared to the basket and slammed the ball through the hoop so hard that as it left the bottom of the net it spun back toward the rim and bounced off — leaving flummoxed game officials to rule no basket on the play.

“The ball went in,” Harden said after the game — and officiating crew chief James Capers later said …

Former Scotland rugby union captain John Barclay announced his retirement from Test rugby on Wednesday.

“But for me and my family it feels like the right time.”

Jesus Aspires To Rival City Team-Mate Aguero

Gabriel Jesus ended his eight match goal drought with a brace in Manchester City’s 4-1 victory over Burnley on Tuesday and hopes this can spark him into emulating team-mate Sergio Aguero’s scoring rate.

The 22-year-old Brazilian has got his chance to lead the City line, and will do so again in the Manchester derby on Saturday, because record goalscorer Aguero is injured.

Jesus — bought for a reported £27 million ($35 million) from Palmeiras in the January transfer window in 2017 — said he is confident in his abilities as a goal scorer but just needs to follow 31-year-old Aguero’s …

Tearful Weightlifting Gold As SEA Games Bounce Back

Philippines weightlifter Kristel Macrohon claimed a tearful Southeast Asian Games gold medal as the regional Olympics got back into full swing on Wednesday, a day after being battered by a deadly typhoon.

Macrohon posed alongside her “inspiration”, Olympic silver medallist Hidilyn Diaz, after winning the women’s 71-kg category in Manila in front of cheering Filipino fans.

The 56-sport SEA Games resumed a full programme on Wednesday, organisers said, after Typhoon Kammuri forced about half of Tuesday’s events to be rescheduled.

Four people were killed after the storm roared across the Philippines south of Manila, which is jointly hosting the Games …

England Cricket Great Willis Dies Aged 70

Former England captain and fearsome pace bowler Bob Willis has died aged 70, his family announced on Wednesday.

Willis, who captained his country between 1982 and 1984, played in 90 Test matches with his most memorable performance his eight for 43 in the third Ashes Test against Australia at Headingley in 1981.

Star all-rounder Ian Botham would later describe his team-mate as a “tremendous trier, a great team man and an inspiration — the only world-class fast bowler in my time as an England player”.

Willis — who in 1965 added Dylan as a third name by deed poll due …

Paris 2024 Chief Confident IOC On Board With Tahiti

Tahiti’s bid to host the surfing competitions at the 2024 Paris Olympics has not met with resistance from the IOC despite its remote location, according to the head of the competition’s organising committee.

The French Polynesian island of almost 200,000 inhabitants is a full 15,700km (9,755 miles) and a 23-hour flight away from the French capital.

However it has emerged as the frontrunner to serve as the host venue for a sport that will make its Olympic debut at next year’s Tokyo Games.

The village of Teahupo’o, a regular stop on the World Surf League circuit, boasts some of the …

North Korea’s Kim In New Horse Ride Through Winter Snows

North Korean media published fresh pictures Wednesday of leader Kim Jong Un riding a white horse on a sacred mountain, imagery that experts say is heavy with symbolism and may indicate a policy announcement.

The photos come as nuclear talks with the United States are stalled and with a looming end-of-year deadline set by North Korea for some kind of concession from Washington.

Kim — in a black leather trenchcoat he has worn recently to open a flagship construction project and supervise a weapons test — was pictured leading a squad of riders in a white forest near Mount

Lawmakers To Consider Drawing Up Trump Impeachment Articles

US lawmakers will start debating whether to draw up articles of impeachment against Donald Trump on Wednesday, based on a report detailing “overwhelming evidence” the US president committed misconduct in office and obstruction.

The House Intelligence Committee report published Tuesday accused Trump of subverting national security as he pressured Ukraine for dirt on a Democratic election rival.

Immediately dismissed by the White House as the product of a “one-sided sham process,” the document forms the basis for the House Judiciary Committee to draw up formal charges, or articles of impeachment, in the coming weeks.

Behind closed doors, the Democratic-led panel …

Japanese Doctor Who Helped Afghans For Decades Killed

A Japanese doctor whose long career was dedicated to helping some of Afghanistan’s poorest people was among six people killed Wednesday in an attack in the east of the country, officials said.

The armed assault in Jalalabad city, the capital of Nangarhar province, was the second deadly incident involving aid workers in recent days and prompted appalled reaction in Afghanistan and internationally.

Tetsu Nakamura, 73, was the head of Peace Japan Medical Services — known as Peshawar Kai in Japanese — and had been working in the region since the 1980s, when he began treating patients with leprosy in Peshawar …

China Warns US Of A ‘Price’ For Uighur Bill

China warned Wednesday that a “price must be paid” after the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation seeking sanctions against senior Chinese officials over the crackdown on mainly Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang.

The legislation adds to tensions between the two superpowers just as they are locked in negotiations to finalise a “phase one” deal to resolve their protracted trade war.

US President Donald Trump had already angered Beijing after he signed legislation supporting pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, prompting China earlier this week to impose sanctions on US-based NGOs and suspend future visits by US warships to the semi-autonomous …
