UN Assembly Condemns US Embargo On Cuba, For 28th time

The UN General Assembly condemned the nearly 60-year-old US embargo on Cuba Thursday for the 28th year in a row, calling for an end to it by a vote of 187 to three.
Only Israel and Brazil voted with the US against the resolution. Two other US allies — Ukraine and Colombia — abstained.

First imposed on October 19, 1960, in response to Havana’s nationalization of US-owned oil refineries, and extended in 1962, the embargo is an enduring legacy of the Cold War hostilities between the two countries.

It was denounced as “anachronistic” and “inhumane” during two days of debate

Nato Alliance Experiencing Brain Death, Says Macron

President Emmanuel Macron of France has described Nato as “brain dead”, stressing what he sees as waning commitment to the transatlantic alliance by its main guarantor, the US.

Interviewed by the Economist, he cited the US failure to consult Nato before pulling forces out of northern Syria.

He also questioned whether Nato was still committed to collective defence.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a key ally, said she disagreed with Mr Macron’s “drastic words”.

Russia, which sees Nato as a threat to its security, welcomed the French president’s comments as “truthful words”.

US-Led Coalition Launches Operation To Protect Gulf Waters

US launched operations in Bahrain on Thursday to protect shipping in the troubled waters of the Gulf, following a string of attacks that Washington and its allies blamed on Iran.

The coalition, aimed at warding off the perceived threat to the world’s oil supply, has been in the making since June.

Iran, which has denied any responsibility for the mystery attacks, has put forward its own proposals for boosting Gulf security that pointedly exclude outside powers.

Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, joined the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) in August. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates

US Warns Iran Is Preparing A ‘Nuclear Breakout’

The United States has accused Iran of preparing “a rapid nuclear breakout” after it began pumping uranium gas into hundreds of centrifuges, another step that violates the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the comments on Thursday, after Iran stepped up activity at its underground Fordow nuclear plant. He warned against Tehran’s “violence and terror” and urged the international community to take immediate action.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) confirmed the latest nuclear programme step after 2,000kg (4,400 pounds) of uranium hexafluoride was transferred from the Natanz nuclear facility to

Serbia’s Defence Ministry Slammed For Promoting Revisionism

Serbia’s defence ministry was sharply rebuked by human rights activists for promoting books that deny war crimes committed by Serb forces in former Yugoslavia.

This week the ministry promoted a new book titled – Tuzla Gate : a staged tragedy – that denies the fact that on May 25, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces fired an artillery round that hit an area of Tuzla’s city centre known as the “Gate”, killing 71 civilians – mostly young people averaging 23 years of age.

Another 240 people were wounded.

The book, written by Ilija Brankovic, a former general of the Serb-dominated Yugoslav People’s

The sentence on Thursday was the highest-ever penalty handed down by the Hague-based court.

Saudi Recruited Twitter Employees Charged With Spying – US

Saudi Arabia’s government, frustrated by growing criticism of its leaders and policies on social media, recruited two Twitter employees to gather confidential personal information on thousands of accounts that included prominent opponents, prosecutors alleged on Wednesday.

The complaint unsealed in US District Court in San Francisco detailed a coordinated effort by Saudi government officials to recruit employees at the social media giant to look up the private data of Twitter accounts, including email addresses linked to the accounts and internet protocol addresses that can give up a user’s location.

The accounts included those of a popular critic of the government

Ukrainians Demand Answers Year After Murder Of Kateryna

Kyiv, Ukraine – A year after her death, hundreds gathered in front of Ukraine’s presidential administration in Kyiv, the capital, to remember murdered activist Kateryna Handziuk.

Carrying signs reading “Who ordered the murder of Katya?”, they were also there to demand justice.

Handziuk, a 33-year-old anti-corruption activist from the southern city of Kherson, died on November 4, 2018, from burns sustained in an acid attack.

Those who allegedly ordered and organised the plot against Handziuk remain free.

The mood at the Kyiv protest was sombre as Handziuk’s father, Viktor Handziuk, addressed the crowd.

“It’s been a very difficult year,”

Ayodhya, India – Ayodhya and its twin city Faizabad in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) are in a state of heightened anxiety as the country’s top court is expected to deliver its verdict in the seven decades old legal dispute over a spot of land that Muslims and Hindus both claim as theirs.

The Supreme Court, which concluded its hearings in the case last month, will decide by mid-November whether a Hindu temple should be built in place of the medieval era Babri mosque, which was demolished by Hindu mobs in 1992.

Inside The Baghdad Tower Taken Over By Protesters

Baghdad, Iraq – Dark and narrow, the stairway that leads to the top floor of Baghdad’s “Turkish Restaurant” building is teeming with people. Once home to a popular rooftop restaurant, the ramshackle structure in the centre of the Iraqi capital has become a landmark of the ongoing mass protests against the country’s political establishment.

The high-rise was evacuated in 2003 when it was bombed by invading US forces, leaving in its wake an empty concrete carcass. For over a decade, the tower remained uninhabited, until a group of demonstrators claimed it as their own on October 25 and made it
