Hong Kong Police Fire Tear Gas To Break Up Rally

Hong Kong, China – Police in Hong Kong have used tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons to disperse anti-government protesters as thousands gathered for a banned rally calling for international emergency support as the city’s democracy movement pushes into its 22nd week.

To sidestep the ban, pro-democracy candidates re-billed Saturday’s gathering as a rally for local elections later this month, which does not require the same approval for smaller assemblies.

Anti-Migration Deal Between Italy And Libya Renewed

A deal to restrict the arrival of migrants and refugees into Italy from Libya has renewed automatically on Saturday.

The MoU, signed in February 2017 by Italy and the UN-recognised Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) led by Fayez al-Sarraj, set out a framework for the two countries to work together in “development cooperation, countering illegal migration, human trafficking and smuggling and reinforcing security at the Libya-Italy border”.

Despite calls from human rights groups to revoke it, the newly installed Italian government signalled it has no intention of changing course in the way it deals with its Libyan partners.

Nine Children Killed In Afghanistan Landmine Blast

Nine children were killed when a planted roadside bomb exploded as they walked to school in a northeastern province of Afghanistan, government and police officials said.

The blast happened in Darqad district of Takhar province on Saturday, when the children, aged between eight and 11, stepped on the bomb planted on a road in a Taliban-controlled village.

“In the morning on roadside, nine children were killed in a landmine blast placed by the Taliban. Three children, who were part of the group, are missing,” Jawad Hejri, a spokesman for the Takhar provincial governor, told Al Jazeera.

Millions of students across Iraq are losing out amid a shortage of teachers and education funding, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has said.

Brazilian investigators said on Friday a Greek-flagged ship carrying Venezuelan crude was the source of oil tarring Brazil’s coastline over the past two months, but the firm running the ship said its voyage finished “uneventfully”.

A federal police document seen by Reuters said the tanker, Bouboulina, owned by Greece’s Delta Tankers Ltd, appears to have spilt the crude about 700km (420 miles) off Brazil’s coast around July 28-29, after loading the oil at Venezuela’s Jose terminal.

Delta Tankers said the Bouboulina had left Venezuela on July 19 bound for Malacca, Malaysia, “where she discharged her entire cargo without any shortage”.

A “terrorist attack” on a military post in strife-torn northeastern Mali has left 49 soldiers dead, the army said Saturday, revising downward an earlier death toll.
The assault on Friday at Indelimane, in the Menaka region, close to the border with Niger, was one of the deadliest strikes against Mali’s military in a region wracked by Islamist violence.
