Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged Sunday to take Britain out of the EU by January 31 then set about reinvigorating public services, as he launched his Conservative Party’s general election manifesto.

Having taken over a minority administration in July and been unable to speed his EU divorce deal through parliament, Johnson is seeking a majority at the December 12 snap election — called in a bid to break the Brexit logjam.

Johnson said his “sensible, moderate, tax-cutting” agenda would help reunite Britain after three years of acrimony following the 2016 referendum vote to leave the European Union.

Olympic Doping Ban Looms For Russia After WADA Panel Ruling

The prospect of Russia being banned from next year’s Tokyo Olympics moved a step closer as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recommended the country’s drug-testing authority be declared non-compliant, with charges racking up against Russia and the clock ticking ahead of next July’s Games.

WADA said in Canada overnight Friday its Compliance Review Committee (CRC) recommended the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) be suspended again when the global watchdog meets in Paris on December 9.

If WADA chiefs adopt the recommendation, Russia faces severe sanctions including a possible ban from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Oil From Spill In Brazil Washes Up In Rio State

Oil from a spill that has contaminated a stretch of Brazil’s coast was detected in Rio de Janeiro state, the navy said Saturday, as President Jair Bolsonaro warned the country was preparing for the worst.

Some 300 grams — a small quantity of oil — were found far from the region’s most famous beaches, in the sand in the town of Sao Joao da Barra, as the spill moves southward.

Big wave surfers have been flocking to a formerly sleepy Portuguese fishing town, chasing monster waves that are some of the highest ever surfed.

Earlier this month the news broke that a set of fearsome 20-metre (65-feet) waves were coming to the small town of Nazare on Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

Protesters Tear-Gassed In Bogota

Security forces tear-gassed protesters who filled the streets of Bogota on Saturday for a third straight day, as President Ivan Duque announced the start of a “national conversation” to assuage popular anger.

Duque, a conservative who is deeply unpopular 18 months after his election, had proposed the talks on Friday in response to nationwide protests a day earlier that descended into violence, leaving three dead.

US Urges Social Media Platforms To Block Iran Officials

The US State Department on Saturday called on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to suspend the accounts of Iranian government leaders until Tehran re-establishes internet coverage throughout the riot-torn country.

CDHR Raise Alarm, Says There’s An Attempt To Silence Falana

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has declared that there is an attempt to silence the voice of Femi Falana, human rights lawyer.

On Wednesday, a group, Save Nigeria Movement, had asked Falana to stop intimidating security agencies.
