Pope To Comfort Victims Of Japan’s 2011 ‘Triple Disaster’

Pope Francis will meet survivors of Japan’s 2011 “triple disaster” — earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima nuclear meltdown — on the penultimate day of his long-cherished trip to Japan Monday.

After an emotional day comforting survivors of atomic bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima — where the pontiff attacked the “crime” of using nuclear power as a weapon — Francis will meet those still affected by the 2011 tragedy that killed nearly 16,000.

At 2:46 pm (0546 GMT) on March 11 that year, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific seabed just 130 kilometres (80 miles) from Japan’s northeastern coastline, unleashing a

Pro-European Lohannis Re-Elected As Romanian President

Incumbent Klaus Iohannis won the second round of Romanian presidential polls on Sunday, according to exit polls, a result that would confirm the pro-European trajectory of the eastern EU member state.

Thirty years after the fall of communism, the centre-right former physics professor won between 64.8 and 66.5 percent of the vote, exit polls showed, beating Social Democrats (PSD) leader and former prime minister Viorica Dancila.

Dancila received between 33.5 and 35.2 percent, the worst-ever result for the PSD, which has dominated Romanian politics since the fall of communism in 1989.

“I promise to be a president for all Romanians… …

Benzema Helps Madrid Defeat Real Sociedad

Karim Benzema scored his sixth goal in five games to help Real Madrid beat high-flying Real Sociedad 3-1 on Saturday as Gareth Bale came on as a substitute to a screech of whistles at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bale, only recently fit again after a calf injury, was named on the bench following his controversial outing with Wales last week, when he celebrated victory behind a flag that read: “Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order.”

But Zinedine Zidane brought Bale on for Rodrygo in the 67th minute and the home fans, who had already jeered his name before kick-off, made their …

Barbosa Fires Flamengo To Last Gasp Copa Libertadores

Flamengo came back from the dead to break the hearts of holders River Plate and win the Copa Libertadores in Lima on Saturday with a thrilling late brace from Gabriel Barbosa that decided the final 2-1 at the death.

Barbosa scored in the 89th minute and again in injury time to see his side bounce back from Rafael Santos Borre’s 15th-minute opener for River after a game largely dominated by the Argentine side.

After turning the game on its head in a frantic finale, Barbosa then got sent off along with River’s Ezequiel Palacios.

River had never looked like relinquishing …

Dutch Great Van Basten Left Red-Faced After Nazi Quip

Former Dutch football great Marco van Basten apologised Saturday after he was heard using a Nazi greeting to ridicule a Dutch television journalist’s German during an interview.

Van Basten, 55, who is regarded as one of the game’s best ever strikers, made the comment on Fox Sports pay-to-view channel after an interview ahead of the Eredivisie clash between Ajax and Heracles.

His words could be heard in the studio moments after TV presenter Hans Kraay’s interview in German with Heracles’ German manager Frank Wormuth.

“Not too pretty, sieg heil, pfannkuchen (pancake),” Van Basten said, using the Nazi German greeting

Man Utd Pegged Back By Sheffield United After Comeback

Manchester United and Sheffield United shared the spoils after a dramatic 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane on Sunday, with the home side grabbing a late equaliser after a three-goal blitz from the visitors in just seven minutes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, outplayed for most of the game by the promoted side, trailed 2-0 after a first-half goal from John Fleck and a second-half effort from Lys Mousset.

Chris Wilder’s team had been hungrier and more incisive all over the pitch but, from nowhere, United were back in the game when 19-year-old Brandon Williams scored his first senior goal in the …

Three Things We Learned In The Premier League

Liverpool produced their regular party trick, leaving it late before securing all three points against Crystal Palace while Manchester City had to dig deep to see off Frank Lampard’s vibrant Chelsea.

Elsewhere, second-placed Leicester kept the gap to leaders Liverpool to eight points with a 2-0 win at Brighton while Jose Mourinho started his career as Tottenham boss with victory at West Ham.

Manchester United looked set to leave Bramall Lane with a victory after a helter-skelter match but a late Sheffield United equaliser meant they had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

Augsburg Hammer Struggling 10-Man Hertha

Goalkeeper Rune Jarstein was sent off as Hertha Berlin continued to sputter in the Bundesliga, losing 4-0 at Augsburg on Sunday.

Hertha lost a fifth straight game and slid below Augsburg after Philipp Max, Sergio Cordova, Andre Hahn and Florian Niederlechner scored for the hosts. Hertha are just a point above the relegation zone.

Left-back Max opened the scoring for the Bavarians in the 18th minute with a free-kick but the turning point came 10 minutes later.

Jarstein earned a red card with a studs-up challenge on Niederlechner. Cordova claimed the home side’s second in the process.

Bordeaux Edge 10-Man Monaco To Go Third In Ligue 1

Depleted Bordeaux edged in-form Monaco 2-1 at home on Sunday to claw back into the top three in Ligue 1.

Hiroshima Survivors Tell Pope Of Attack ‘Hell’

Survivors of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima told Pope Francis on Sunday of the “scene of hell” after the bombing, as the pontiff hit out against the use of the weapons.

The pope began his four-day trip to Japan with stops in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, where he paid tribute to those affected by the two bombs dropped by US forces in 1945 at the end of World War II.

In Hiroshima, Francis met several survivors of the attack, who echoed his calls for the world never to forget the atrocity of the bombings.
