World Athletics Suspends Russia Readmission Process

World Athletics announced on Friday it had suspended the reinstatement process of Russian athletics and was contemplating expelling the country entirely from the sport.

The news comes a day after the president of the Russian athletics federation (RUSAF) and other senior officials were suspended for “serious breaches” of anti-doping rules, putting the nation’s track and field athletes’ participation at next year’s Tokyo Olympics in further danger.

The head of World Athletics Sebastian Coe described those banned as ‘renegade factions’.

Scotland were drawn Friday to play Israel in Glasgow in the Euro 2020 play-off semi-finals next March, but Steve Clarke’s team must win that game and then a second one-off away tie, if they are to make the tournament itself.

Scotland, who performed poorly in the main qualifying campaign but did win their last three matches, will fancy their chances at home to an Israel side ranked 89th in the world and who finished fifth out of six teams in qualifying Group G. They will meet at Hampden Park on March 26.

Russia beat Novak Djokovic’s Serbia on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Davis Cup following a cliff-hanger match that went all the way to a deciding tie-breaker.

Merchants Dump POS, Inactive Terminals Hit 131,201

Some retailers using Point of Sales terminals to receive payments have abandoned the device and reverted to cash payments, investigation has shown.

Some of them who spoke with our correspondent said the decision to dump the PoS devices meant to facilitate cashless transactions was because customers declined using the terminals to avoid paying N50 stamp duty charge.

Traders Count Losses Over Oyingbo Market Closure

Traders at the popular Oyingbo Market in Lagos have been counting their losses following its closure by Lagos State government over environmental infractions.

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Thursday shut the market over indiscriminate refuse dumping and refusal to patronise Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.

Other infractions included roadside trading and poor hygienic practices resulting in serious environmental problems in the area.

The traders, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the sudden closure without notice was adversely affecting their businesses.
