Boy Or Girl? US Parents Go Too Far In Gender Reveals

A plane crash in Texas, a deadly explosion in Iowa, a massive fire in Arizona — elaborate baby gender reveal parties, a growing trend among parents in the US, have taken a nightmarish turn.

“It’s a girl!” After dropping 350 gallons of pink-colored water, a small plane flying at low altitude suddenly stalled, crashing in a Texas field.

There were, fortunately, no victims in the early-September crash, but another such party — where expecting parents stage elaborate events to reveal their future child’s sex — turned fatal when an Iowa woman, 56, was killed the following month by shrapnel …

Airbnb became a leading partner of the Olympics in a nine-year deal announced Monday that drew strong criticism from Paris, host of the 2024 summer Games.

In the deal unveiled in London, the home rental platform became a “Top” International Olympic Committee (IOC) partner, joining titans including Coca Cola and Visa on the highest sponsorship level.

But in a letter sent last week and seen by AFP on Monday, the mayor of Paris warned IOC head Thomas Bach about the “risks” of the deal.

The Socialist Anne Hidalgo, who is up for re-election in 2020, vowed her “total determination” to …

Donald Trump’s doctor on Monday denied reports that the US president had recently suffered chest pain after he attended an unannounced medical checkup in Washington.

Diego Maradona has quit as coach of Argentinian Superliga side Gimnasia, less than three months after taking over, the club announced on Tuesday.

“Maradona is no longer the Gimnasia coach,” club president Gabriel Pellegrino said on Argentina’s Radio La Red.

“He said he was here to add to things, not to divide,” was Pellegrino’s explanation for the World Cup-winner’s decision.

Reports in Argentina suggested Maradona’s departure was linked to an imminent management shake-up at the club in La Plata, 50 kilometres from Buenos Aires.

Maradona was no longer keen on remaining at the club after Pellegrino, the man who brought …

UN ‘Alarmed’ Dozens May Be Dead In Iran Protests

The United Nations voiced alarm Tuesday at reports dozens may have been killed in Iranian demonstrations, as the Islamic republic said it would unblock the internet only once calm has been restored.

Amnesty International said more than 100 demonstrators were believed to have been killed across Iran in five days since security forces were ordered to “crush” the protests triggered by fuel price rises.

Iran’s economy has been battered since May last year when the United States unilaterally withdrew from a 2015 nuclear agreement and reimposed crippling sanctions.

Iran’s shock decision to increase fuel prices Friday sparked the protests in …

Taliban Release Two Western Hostages In Afghanistan

The Taliban handed two Western hostages over to US forces in southern Afghanistan Tuesday, three years after they were abducted, in a swap for three high-ranking insurgent prisoners that could boost peace talks.

The exchange of American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weeks for the militants — including Anas Haqqani, brother to the Taliban’s deputy leader — was welcomed by both the United States and the insurgents.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the releases “give us hope for the success of intra-Afghan peace negotiations, which the United States stands ready to support.”

Hong Kong University Protesters Defy Surrender Warnings

Dozens of exhausted pro-democracy protesters occupying a Hong Kong university defied warnings to surrender Tuesday on the third day of a stand-off with police, as China sent fresh signals that its patience with nearly six months of unrest was running out.

The siege at PolyU began Sunday with many hundreds of protesters occupying the campus as part of a broader campaign of massive disruption across Hong Kong that began last week.

NDDC

New NDDC Board Needs A Free Hand

A popular adage says when the cat is away from the house the mouse has a field day. It does appear that the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari from Nigeria has given the mouse in the Ministry of the Niger Delta enough freedom to play games with the fortunes of the people of the Niger Delta.

How else can one describe the meddlesomeness of the Minister of the Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio, in the affairs of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) through an illegal interim management committee that is not recognized by the law which set up the …
