Iraq Gov’t Urged To Call In Forces To End ‘Bloodbath’

The death toll during demonstrations in Iraq surged to more than 300 as security forces were accused of “relentlessly” targeting protesters.

Six more people were killed in the capital Baghdad on Sunday and dozens of others hurt in clashes.

The head of the Iraqi parliament’s human rights commission told Al Jazeera that 319 people have died since October 1 with more than 15,000 wounded. Most of the casualties were anti-government protesters, but security officers also died in the violence.

Iraqi security forces in Baghdad fired tear gas at demonstrators and erected concrete barriers in a bid to block their movement.

Jordan Reclaims Borderlands As Israel Ties Under Strain

Jordan on Sunday received two stretches of land it had allowed Israel to use for decades, amid tense relations between the neighbours 25 years after they signed a landmark peace deal.

Under the terms of two annexes in the 1994 treaty, the enclaves of al-Baqoura and al-Ghumar would remain under Jordanian sovereignty while Israeli farmers maintained access to the land.

But in 2018, amid mounting public pressure not to renew the arrangement relating to the two territories, Jordan’s King Abdullah II submitted a one-year notice of termination to Israel.

Bolivian Military Asks Morales To Resign

The commander of Bolivia’s armed forces called on embattled President Evo Morales to resign amid a growing furor over his disputed re-election.

Morales should step aside to help ensure stability in the country, armed forces commander Williams Kaliman told reporters on Sunday, heaping pressure on the leftist leader as he deals with a widening backlash over a disputed election.

“After analysing the internal conflict situation, we ask the president of the state to renounce his presidential mandate, allowing for peace to be restored and the maintenance of stability for the good of Bolivia,” said Kaliman.

Hong Kong Protesters Vandalise Malls, Subway Station

Police fired tear gas to break up rallies as black-clad activists blocked roads and trashed shopping malls across Hong Kong on the 24th straight weekend of anti-government protests.

Pro-democracy demonstrators vandalised a train station on Sunday in the central new town of Sha Tin in the New Territories region and smashed up a restaurant perceived as being pro-Beijing, overturning tables and smashing glass panels, two weeks before district council elections in the Chinese-ruled city.

Violence also spilled out onto the streets of Tuen Mun outside the “V city” mall with running battles between riot police and protesters.

Oleg Sokolov, a 63-year-old history lecturer who received France’s Legion d’Honneur in 2003, was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder after he was hauled out of the icy Moika River with a backpack containing a woman’s arms.

Ihedioha Will Focus On Vocational Technical Education

Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha has declared that his administration will give priority to vocational and technical education in order to tackle unemployment in the State.
