Anambra: Lawyer Faults Car Gift To Federal Security Teams

Activist and lawyer, Tochukwu Nweke, has condemned the donation of 111 vehicles and 77 motorcycles, equipped with Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, by Anambra State government to security agencies in the state at the weekend.

Speaking to Newsmen yesterday, he described the gesture as playing Santa Claus by a proverbial mouse.

The vehicles were for monitoring and tracking criminals in the state.

Governor Willie Obiano had while presenting the security apparatuses to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abubakar Adamu, at the second phase of ‘Operation Nkpochapu’, also launched the Smart City Security Surveillance System.

House Of Representatives Decry Delays In Justice Delivery

The House of Representatives has decried the slow pace of justice delivery in the country, saying the backlog of pending cases in various courts remains a source of concern in the judiciary.

Chairman, House committee on Judiciary, Onofiok Luke, who made the assertion yesterday in Abuja, said it was unfortunate that some matters spend up to 10 years before their final adjudication at the Supreme Court.

He added that allowing almost all cases to get to the Supreme Court without limitations was a major part of the challenge in the nation’s legal system.

Fuel Subsidy To Gulp ₦450bn In 2020 – Zainab Ahmed

The Minister for Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, says under-recovery of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly referred to as fuel subsidy, will gulp ₦450bn in 2020.

She said this on Monday in Abuja, at the public presentation of the 2020 budget proposals.

Ahmed said it was called ‘under-recovery’ because it was the cost of operation of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation.

“We have a provision for under-recovery of PMS in the sum of ₦450bn. If you look at the Budget office’s website, it is in the fiscal framework, which is an annexure to the budget.”

The Federal Government says it will increase crude oil production to the national target of three million barrels per day and reserves of 40 million barrels before 2023.

GenCos Release 3,480 MWH Of Electricity To National Grid

Electricity Generation Companies (GenCos), comprising gas-fired and hydro stations said they released an average of 3,480 MegaWatts of electricity into the national grid on Sunday.

This is contained in a daily energy report by the Advisory Power Team, office of the Vice President a copy of which was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

The report said that the electricity sent out by the GenCos was up by 254.02 megawatts from the 3,226 released on Saturday.

It, however, said that 1,720 megawatts could not be generated due to unavailability of gas.

At least three children were killed and eight civilians wounded Monday in an airstrike on a residential neighbourhood near the Capital of Libya, the health ministry said.

Spokesman Lamine al-Hachemi said another child was seriously wounded and the parents of the dead children were also injured in the airstrike that hit their home in Al-Fernaj, a suburb southeast of Tripoli.

Mrs Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, says the nation will not be able to reach 80 percent revenue performance for 2019.

She said this on Monday in Abuja at the public presentation of the 2020 budget proposals.

Ahmed said that as at half-year, the actual aggregate revenue for 2019 was ₦2.04 trillion, which was 58 percent of the prorate target.

Abuja High Court Disposes Of 13,961 Cases In 2018/2019

The Chief Judge (CJ) of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja , Justice Ishaq Bello, on Monday, disclosed that a total of 13,961 cases were disposed of by the court in the 2018/2019 legal year which ended last August.

Bello said out of the 30,582 caseload in the preceding year, 16,396 were fresh cases, while 14,186 were carried over from the 2017/2018 legal year.

He made the disclosure at a special court session held in commemoration of the new 2019/2020 legal year.
