Boko Haram now stronger, well equipped with drones

Boko Haram now stronger, well equipped with drones

•Controls 4 of 10 zones in northern Borno
•Nigerian military demoralised, on defensive, as weapons, vehicles fall into disrepair
•West African leaders agree billion-dollar anti-jihadist plan

A report just published in The New York Times (NYT) has painted a depressingly grim picture of the Nigerian military in their battle against Boko Haram, claiming the terrorist sect has returned to the battlefront stronger and better armed. The story follows hard on the heels of audacious raids on military brigades at different times by Boko Haram, using more sophisticated weapons, including drones, to aid their operations.

Meanwhile, West African leaders on Saturday …

Tunde Baiyewu: Being a Lighthouse Family

Tunde Baiyewu: Being a Lighthouse Family

Growing up in an era where cigarette adverts were permitted to air on television and radio, it was a tad difficult to miss those deceptive cuts that told us it was a mark of pristine masculinity to puff on neatly wrapped nicotine.

It was also one of those ads – St. Moritz’s – that introduced me to the music of Lighthouse Family. Ocean Drive’s simple yet inspiring lyrics contradict the reality cigarettes represent, but the minds behind it found it beautiful enough – maybe it’s Tunde Baiyewu’s voice – to rest the soul of the commercial on. Such was the …

How Jonathan signed himself into trouble in 2015

How Jonathan signed himself into trouble in 2015

Sizzling details of some of the behind-the-scene power games during the five years reign of former President Goodluck Jonathan are beginning to surface, one of which was how the former president had already signed himself into trouble with the Fourth Amendment Bill 2015, if not for the last minute intervention by his former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke.

Apart from this, the former president also endured intense pressure from prominent members of the political class, who wanted him to use his office to annex more states ahead of the 2015 general election, using …

Orji Uzo Kalu

Orji Kalu and nullification of his election by tribunal

Abia State’s former governor, Orji Uzo Kalu is not a political neophyte. The All Progressives Congress (APC) senator representing Abia north was governor for eight years. On two occasions, he contested for presidency and lost. At other times, he contested the senatorial seat of his zone and lost. The defeats did not whittle his spirit.Providence, however, smiled on him during the build up to the 2019 general elections when he pitched membership with the APC and won the senatorial election. It was a victory that was however, suspected to have been earned dubiously.

But Kalu, according to the Independent National

Trump confirms death of Osama bin Laden’s son Hamza

US President Donald Trump on Saturday confirmed that Hamza bin Laden, the son and designated heir of Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, was killed in a counter-terrorism operation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

US media reported in late July and early August, citing intelligence officials, that the younger Bin Laden had been killed sometime in the last two years in an operation that involved the United States.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper confirmed the death last month, saying it was “his understanding” that Bin Laden was dead, but Trump and other senior officials had not publicly confirmed the news.

“Hamza bin …

Israel’s longest-serving premier fights for his future

Israel’s longest-serving premier fights for his future

Benjamin Netanyahu has become Israel’s longest-serving prime minister with right-wing leadership and by repeatedly besting rivals with deft political moves, but he will have to pull another rabbit out of his hat in Tuesday’s elections.

The 69-year-old is fighting his second election in five months with a potential corruption indictment looming.

After April polls, he suffered one of the biggest defeats in his political career when his Likud party along with its right-wing and religious allies won a majority, but he failed to form a coalition.

Rather than risk allowing another candidate to have a shot at doing so, he …

Election tribunal judgment saved me from trauma – Jubril

The Guardian, Nigeria reports, and addresses the impostor as President Muhammadu Buhari:

Nigeria as an Army arrangement

Nigeria as an Army arrangement

By Odumodu Gbulagu

Nigeria as it stands today is simply an army arrangement.
Because of the ban on teaching of history in schools, the current generation barely know next to nothing as what has transpired in the history of our country.
Most of them are comfortable with phones and data abusing people who do not share their views in the name of working for one politician or another.

The history of Nigeria cannot be fully appreciated without taking into account the military incursion in politics. It all started with the January 15, 1966 coup d’etat led by Major Nzeogwu and …
