Report: Nigeria loses $600m annually to illegal fishing

Nigeria is losing $600 million annually to illegal and unreported fishing by foreign vessels as a result of lack of equipment such as Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), and adequate manpower to police the country’s vast coastline, THISDAY’s investigation has revealed.

THISDAY gathered that the country also spends $800 million annually on fish importation, being the fourth largest importer of fish in the world, after China, Japan and the United States.

Nigeria imports frozen fish varieties, including mackerel (locally called Titus or alaran), herrings (locally called shawa), horse mackerel (locally called kote), blue whiting (locally called

Seun Onigbinde resigns after backlash

The co-founder of BudgIT Seun Onigbinde has resigned his appointment as the technical adviser to the minister of state for budget national planning.

Onigbinde announced his appointment on September 6 in Medium post. He said the appoint was at the behest of an international development agency.

He faced an intense social media backlash over the appointment, mostly because of his past caustic criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari and his government.

“It is clear that recent media reports about my appointment have created a complex narrative, which I believe would engender an atmosphere of mistrust, as I planned to proceed,” Onigbinde

Presidency: Igbo must strategise for 2023 – Aghanya

Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI), Dennis Aghanya, has called on Igbo to strategise on how to win the presidency in 2023, rather than dissipate energy on whether President Muhammadu Buhari has a certificate or not.

Aghanya’s call is sequel to last week 2019 presidential election judgment between  Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly on the academic certificate of President Buhari.

How Jonathan aided Buhari’s victory in 2015 – Adoke

Former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, has claimed the two-week postponement of the 2015 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not done to mar the victory of Muhamadu Buhari as widely held by his supporters.

Adoke said on the contrary, President Goodluck Jonathan stood a better chance of winning his re-election on the first date if INEC had gone ahead to conduct the polls in the face of insecurity.

Adoke served as AGF during the administration of Jonathan between 2011-2015.

Boko Haram now stronger, well equipped with drones

•Controls 4 of 10 zones in northern Borno
•Nigerian military demoralised, on defensive, as weapons, vehicles fall into disrepair
•West African leaders agree billion-dollar anti-jihadist plan

A report just published in The New York Times (NYT) has painted a depressingly grim picture of the Nigerian military in their battle against Boko Haram, claiming the terrorist sect has returned to the battlefront stronger and better armed. The story follows hard on the heels of audacious raids on military brigades at different times by Boko Haram, using more sophisticated weapons, including drones, to aid their operations.

Meanwhile, West African leaders on Saturday …
