Hope as Chinese researchers identify deafness-casing gene

Chinese researchers have recently made a breakthrough in discovering a gene responsible for deafness, providing a target for treating hearing impairment.

The study published online earlier this month in the international journal Genetics in Medicine described the gene as ABCC1, which has variants associated with hearing loss and plays a key role in maintaining cochlea function.

The cochlea is a spiral tube shaped like a snail shell. It is the auditory area of the inner ear and enables effective hearing.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, played a video recording before the Election Petition Tribunal to establish the allegation that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) used a central server during the February 23 polls.

The film featured the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, notifying the public that the electoral body would transmit election results with the use of smart card reader (SCR) to the INEC central server.

Mr Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Governor, on Monday, made public his assets after he received a copy of the asset declaration form which he had earlier submitted to the Oyo State office of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) in Ibadan.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that details of the assets show that he is worth over N60,473,300,066 according to the figures in the forms calculated with CBN rates for foreign currencies.
