Many thousands protest China extradition bill in Hong Kong

Several hundred thousand people jammed Hong Kong’s streets on Sunday in a last bid to thwart a proposed extradition law that would allow suspects to be sent to China to face trial, with police bracing for the biggest march in the city in 15 years.

Police chiefs called for public restraint, government-funded broadcaster RTHK reported, as they mobilized more than 2,000 officers for a march that organizers expected to draw more than half a million people.

U.S. obstructs €2.5m flood aid relief to Iran

The US has reportedly blocked €2.5 million flood aid relief to Iran, an Iranian Parliament Member Hossein Naghavi Hosseini said on Sunday.

As the MP quoted head of Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) as saying in a meeting at the Parliament, the US has obstructed €2.5 million aid from International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to flood-stricken towns and villages.

“As Red Crescent Ali Asghar Peyvandi informed us, the organization has consumed 1.5 trillion rials (about $11.3 million) over the recent flood in Iran,” Hosseini said, “some 15 countries have sent their aid to Iran as well.”

G20 Finance leaders on Sunday adopted new principles to ensure countries that lend and borrow for infrastructure spending do so in a sustainable manner.

Police arrest FRSC boss for allegedly killing colleague

Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Onitsha, Anambra State, Paulinus Akpotobo, and another senior officer have been arrested by the Onitsha Police Area Command for allegedly strangling a colleague, Emeka Ojei, to death.

The incident reportedly took place on Thursday evening.Sources close to FRSC said trouble started when the deceased threatened to write a petition of corrupt practice against one of the officers to FRSC zonal headquarters in Benin City, Edo State, an action that did not go down well with the affected officer.

Fighting is raging between Syrian government forces and rebels in a de-escalation zone where a truce should be in place, state media and activists reported on Saturday.

On Thursday, jihadist groups led by an Al-Qaeda-linked alliance and Turkish-backed rebels, launched a wide-scale attack on government forces in the northern countryside of Hama in central Syria, which is part of a demilitarised zone declared in September.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, reported that rebels have made territorial advances over the past two days, prompting government forces and allied Russians to step up an air campaign.

Iran has criticised the U.S. for placing new sanctions on a large petrochemicals company, saying it showed that the Trump administration’s recent offer to negotiate was “empty”.

“The recent U.S. sanctions are again a clear violation of international rules and a confirmation of American economic terrorism,’’ Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi was quoted as saying by the IRNA news agency on Saturday.
