President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the surprise departure of his spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, after a combative tenure that saw her all-but kill off traditional White House briefings to journalists.

Sanders has been one of Trump’s most loyal foot soldiers, almost constantly at his side during his tumultuous two and a half years at the White House and during the campaign before.

Trump announced her exit in a tweet and did not name a replacement.

Islamic State reports killing 20 Nigerian soldiers

Islamic State’s West African branch claimed responsibility for an attack on a Nigerian army base in northeastern Borno state and said its fighters had killed 20 soldiers.

The assault, which raised questions about government claims to have almost defeated the insurgents, took place in the town of Kareto on Wednesday.

The barracks were burnt and a tank destroyed, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) said in a statement published on the SITE Intelligence website.

Indian in-laws stab man for marrying their daughter

Four Indian in-laws were arrested in Hyderabad on Sunday, June 9, 2019, after they allegedly stabbed a man for marrying their daughter.

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Imtiaz and he got married to Fatima, aged 19.

The in-laws allegedly attacked the man after he got married to Fatima without informing her relatives before. The reason for the attack was also due to Imtiaz “maligning” their family name.

A 38-year-old  trader, Aliyu Abubakar,  on Friday appeared in a Kubwa Grade I Area Court for allegedly enticing and wooing a married woman.

The police charged Abubakar, who resides in Dei-dei, with enticement of a married woman.

The Prosecution Counsel, John Okpa, told the court that the complainant, Malam Murtala Suleiman, reported the matter at the Dei-dei Police Station on June 13.

Three Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps are currently set up by the villagers displaced in the armed bandit attacks in Shiroro local government area of Niger state.

Oil theft: Shell records loss of 11,000bpd

Oil theft from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) joint venture (JV) pipeline network averaged 11,000 barrels per day (bpd) last year, its General Manager, External Relations Mr. Igo Weli, said on Thursday.

He said this is an increase of about 20 per cent over previous year. The number of sabotage-related spills increased during the same period to 111 compared to 62 in 2017 and, since 2012, SPDC has removed more than 1,160 illegal theft points.

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Strike Force Zone ‘A’ has intercepted 2,494 bags of 50kg parboiled rice, 1288 jerrycans of vegetable oil and assorted cars with Duty Paid Value of N47million in one month.

The Officer in Charge of CGC strike force Zone ‘A’ Deputy Comptroller (DC)  Yahaya Biu, made the disclosure to newsmen on Thursday in Lagos.

A heavy downpour on Wednesday night in Aba, the commercial city of Abia, has left many homes, shops and markets submerged by flood.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that goods estimated at over N15 million were also destroyed by the flood.

At Ahia Ohuru (New Market), over 25 shops on Lines 10, 16, 20, 43, 44 and 47 were all submerged.

Mr Obinna Ogugua, a trader in the market, was said to have lost 32 bales of clothes, worth about N2.9 million.

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court on Thursday arraigned two persons for allegedly stealing bags of biscuits valued at N108,000.

Olayiwola Segun, 27 (M) and Musa Rasidat, 22 (F), were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye.

The defendants, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a charge of stealing.

The police prosecutor Inspector Johnson Okunade told the court that the defendants and two others on the run committed the offence between June 4 and 6 at 1500 hrs (3pm) at Ronak Biscuits factory at Oke-Ureje in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
