Editors seek waivers on newsprint, others

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has solicited waivers on imported materials needed for the print media industry.

The demand, the guild said, would not becloud its sense of responsibility in performing its professional duties to the nation and humanity.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday night after meeting with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, NGE’s President Funke Egbemode said the media are in business, like every other business contributing to the economy.

She said the industry would need such support to stay in business.

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has just listed its shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), rallying N184 billion gain in first day of trading.

US suspends flights to Venezuela indefinitely

The US Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday that it is suspending “all commercial passenger and cargo flights between the United States and Venezuela” indefinitely.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has approved the suspension and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has implemented it, according to a statement from DHS.
“This determination is based on the ongoing political instability and increased tensions in Venezuela and associated inadvertent risk to flight operations,” the statement said, noting a concern for the safety of passengers, crew and aircraft.
A State Department official confirmed the suspension of passenger and cargo flights due to security concerns.

Transparency International (TI) on Wednesday disclosed that Nigeria loses not less than $17 billion annually through illicit financial flows.
The Executive Director of TI and Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, stated this in Abuja during a meeting of his organisation with its West Africa chapters.
While insisting that the political and business elite have deprived Nigerians of their entitlements through corruption in procurement, Rafsanjani said: “Our countries experience enormous challenges with public procurement, political integrity, illicit financial outflows, migration and many others.
