Venezuela crisis continues

The battle for control of Venezuela rages on. Opposition leader Juan Guaido called for protesters to return to the streets, a day after he stood with a group of soldiers and announced an uprising to seize power from embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

But Maduro says the “coup” attempt by Guaido — who is the head of Venezuela’s National Assembly — was put down by the military.

In a televised speech, Maduro rejected claims he’s lost control of the military, and he accused “imperialist” forces of trying to take over the country.

Lawyers query timing of Bauchi Governor-Elect’s arraignment

A group, Body of Bauchi Lawyers of Conscience (BOBOLAC), has faulted the failed arrangement of Bauchi Governor- Elect, Bala Mohammed by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on Monday before the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Maitama in Abuja over alleged failure to declare his assets.

The group described the EFCC’s action as a threat to democracy, alleging foul play in the timing of the arraignment which is a month before the Governor- Elect’s inauguration on May 29.

Obaseki pledges to pay more than ₦30, 000 minimum wage

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has said that his administration would pay above the new minimum wage of N30, 000 mínimum wage if the workers increased their productivity and Internally Generated Revenue(IGR).

Obaseki said he would increase the minimum wage above N30, 000 as he was ready to pay for hard work and productivity.

Obaseki, who spoke at the 2019 May Day rally at the University of Bénin Sports Complex, assured he would commence immediate payment of the N30, 000 minimum wage.

Amosun settles deductions, April salary with ₦20.2bn

Amid low turnout of workers that almost marred the 2019 edition of May Day celebration in Ogun State, out – going Governor Ibikunle Amosun cleared all outstanding deductions owed the workers and also paid their April salary.

Amosun also announced that new set of staff (about 1000 of them) have been recruited into the state workforce, just less than 30 days to leave office.

Russia urges Nigerians to apply for educational scholarship

The Embassy of Russia in Nigeria, has urged Nigerians to explore opportunity through application for the ongoing Russian Government Scholarship programme, to improve themselves educationally.

Mr Ivan Lydkin, Press Attache of the Embassy, made the call on Wednesday in Abuja while addressing executive members of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS).

He described the scholarship programme as Russia’s way to strengthen its bilateral relations with Nigeria, under its reunification intiative.

According to him, one of Russia’s missions here is to introduce Nigeria students to Russia’s academic opportunities, to enable them to improve themselves.

Court Jails Julian Assange for violating bail conditions

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has been sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching his bail conditions.

The 47-year-old was found guilty of breaching the Bail Act last month after his arrest at the Ecuadorian Embassy.

He took refuge in the London embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations, which he has denied.

In a letter read to the court, Assange said he had found himself “struggling with difficult circumstances”.

He apologised to those who “consider I’ve disrespected them”, a packed Southwark Crown Court heard.

BREAKING: APC suspends former Ekiti Gov Oni indefinitely

Chief Segun Oni, the immediate past Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been suspended indefinitely from the party.

Oni, who was also a former governor of Ekiti, was suspended over alleged anti-party activities.

Workers in Cross River have protested the payment of May salary on the first day of the month by Gov. Ben Ayade.

Ayade has consistently paid the May salary on the first day of the month in the last three years of his tenure.
