Jet crash between Las Vegas, Monterrey in Mexico kill 14

Mexican authorities have found the remains of a plane that disappeared after leaving from Las Vegas, amid reports all 14 people on board were killed.

The wreckage of the plane, a Bombardier Challenger 601, crashed in the mountainous region of Monclova, while on route to the northern Mexican city of Monterrey.

The remains were found about 130 miles northwest of the town of Monclova.

Reports said the passengers were returning after watching Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez, who defeated Daniel Jacobs at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

200 million West Africans live below poverty line

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Office for West Africa has raised the alarm that 200 million or 53.5 per cent of West Africans live below poverty line.

It said that West Africa had a population of about 377 million in 2018.

Trump’s tax returns: US Treasury secretary defies congress

The United States Treasury Department informed Congress Monday it will not turn over President Donald Trump’s tax returns, according to the deadline given by the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

In a May 6 letter, Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin told House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal that he would not comply with the Democrat’s April 3 request, saying it lacks “a legitimate legislative purpose.”

The snub has left the Democrats-dominated house pondering the next step.

Reuters journalists convicted in Myanmar pardoned, freed

Two Reuters journalists jailed in Myanmar after they were convicted of breaking the Official Secrets Act walked free from a prison on the outskirts of Yangon on Tuesday after spending more than 500 days behind bars, witnesses said.

The two reporters, Wa Lone, 33, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 29, had been convicted in September and sentenced to seven years in jail, in a case that raised questions about Myanmar’s progress toward democracy and sparked an outcry from diplomats and human rights advocates.

New regulations to protect local govt funds from governor

Local governments financial autonomy is set for a major boost — courtesy of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

The agency yesterday banned banks, governors,  financial institutions, public officers and other stakeholders from tampering with the statutory allocations of Local Government Areas from the Federation Account.
