Akwa Ibom govt. appropriates ₦100m for polytechnic courses

Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, says the state government has earmarked ₦100 million as grant for the state-owned polytechnic to begin the process of securing full accreditation for its courses.

According to a statement by Mr Essien Uduese, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Emmanuel said this at the sixth convocation of the polytechnic held at its Ikot Osurua campus in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.

The governor was quoted to have also expressed delight that the National Board for Technical Education had granted approval to the polytechnic for a few outstanding courses.

CBN denies trending ‘stolen, missing money’ story

There is no  money  missing or stolen from the  Central Bank of Nigeria’s  coffers as reported in some section of the media, the  bank’s spokesman Isaac Okoroafor said.

Okoroafor, the Director Corporate Communications,  made the refutal in a statement on Sunday while reacting to a recent article and audio clips in which the CBN Governor and other senior officials were heard  discussing discrepancies in the bank’s accounts.

Okoroafor said that the audio was distorted in a manner which creates a different impression of the matter being discussed, which was to proffer solutions to a misunderstanding that affected the Bank’s balance

Justice Bulkachuwa not indicted – DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied that it indicted Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, Chairman, Presidential Election Tribunal, for bribery and corruption.

Public Relations Officer of the service, Mr Peter Afunanya, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, in reaction to reports of such indictment of the judge by DSS.

He urged the public to disregard the report, saying it only existed in the imagination of the authors.

Afunanya described the report as “unfortunate”, adding that making the falsehood public was unethical.

He said the service had commenced a detailed investigation into the controversies surrounding the publication.

Three sustain injury in Anambra petrol tanker accident

Three persons on Sunday sustained severe injuries when a fully laden petrol tanker lost control and crashed into a a Lexus Jeep before falling into a nearby valley at Amawbia, Awka in Anambra.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who was at the scene of the crash, reports that two of the injured persons were occupants of a Lexus Jeep while the third was the tanker driver.

Tanzanian apprehended for selling daughter for body parts

A Tanzanian man has been arrested for selling his six-year-old daughter to be killed so that her body parts could be used in a potion to make him rich, police said Saturday.

A police statement said that the child, Rose Japhet, was killed last week and her body found in the southwestern district of Mbeya, in a region has been hit by a spate of ritual killings of children.

NC wins South Africa’s election with 57.51%

The final tally of the South African election is out, with the ruling African National Congress (ANC), winning 57.51% of votes cast.

The website of the Electoral Commission, which showed 100 per cent capturing of the 17 668 318 votes cast, showed that the ANC polled 10 026 047 votes, which is less than the 11 million votes won in 2014.

Analysts said the electoral performance was the worst since the party came to power in 1994, with legendary Nelson Mandela as president.
