Chinese illegal immigrants in Nigeria: NGO calls for probe

A leading pro-democracy and non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Nigeria, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has urged the National Assembly to investigate claims that Chinese company in Nigeria recruit convicts from their country in Nigeria as technicians.

This followed what it called an extensively damaging public admission by a committee of the House of Representatives that Chinese companies in Nigeria were bringing in prison inmates from China to work as expatriates on many lucrative construction sites paid for by Nigeria.

HURIWA urged the National Assembly to name and shame public officials facilitating such illegality.

Court grants Akpabio leave to challenge defection suit

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday granted leave to a former Senate’s Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to challenge a suit seeking his removal along with 53 others from office.

The suit was instituted on July 2018 by an advocacy body known as Legal Defence and Assistant Project (LEPAD).

LEPAD is seeking the court to declare the seats of the affected national legislators vacant over their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Jimmy Carter, the 38th president of the United States has undergone surgery after he fell and broke his hip.

Carter, 94, fell at his home in Plains, Georgia, Monday morning as he was leaving to go turkey hunting, The Carter Center announced, according to a report by ABC News

The doctor who performed the surgery at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, said the procedure was successful, according to the statement.

Hollywood actress Doris Day passes on at 97

Hollywood super-actress, singer, and animal welfare activist Doris Day has died aged 97.

She was one of the biggest female stars of all time, and starred in films such as Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk and had a hit in 1956 with Que Sera, Sera.

Her screen partnership with Rock Hudson was one of the biggest box-office draws of the 1950s and ’60s.

She injured her right leg in a car accident in October 1937 which reduced her prospects as a professional dancer.

Details are yet to be revealed concerning the cause of her death.

Saudi Arabia said Monday that two of its oil tankers had been sabotaged off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, in attacks it described as posing a threat to the security of global oil supplies.

Four tankers were targeted overall, according to the UAE, in what the country said was a “sabotage attack” that took place near the strategic port of Fujairah on Sunday.
Tensions have risen in the oil-rich region in recent weeks amid the deployment of a growing number of United States military assets to the Middle East due to deteriorating relations with Iran.

Armed attackers killed a priest and five worshippers during mass on Sunday in an attack on a Catholic church in northern Burkina Faso.

AfDB approves $200m for Nigeria’s electrification project

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved $200million to boost Nigeria’s electrification project, particularly the off-grid expansion being implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

A source in the bank, who did not want his name in print because he was not authorised to speak, said the project is expected to provide electricity to households, medium, small and micro enterprises (MSMEs) and public institutions in a least-cost and timely manner.
