EFCC kicks against ex parte order to stop Okorocha’s probe

Following an ex parte order stopping the ongoing investigation of the Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas, the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) has petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court Justice Abdul Kafarati.

The anti-graft agency has asked the NJC and Justice Kafarati to review the conduct of the trial judge, Justice Taiwo O. Taiwo of the Federal High Court on alleged obstruction of investigation of some high profile cases.

Justice Taiwo had granted a similar order staying action on the investigation of the Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Court condemns Houseboy to death for killing boss

A Lagos High Court in Igbosere yesterday sentenced a 25-year-old houseboy, Leudjou Koyemen Joel (aka William Smith) to death by hanging for killing his employer.

He murdered  Dayo Enioluwa Adeleke, the daughter of the late Brig.-Gen. Adekola Alfred Adeleke, on December 20, 2016.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye convicted Joel, after a nearly two-year trial which followed his not guilty plea to a one-count charge of murder.

The defendant, a refugee from Cameroon, had testified that Adeleke mistakenly stabbed herself after she fell while pursuing him with a kitchen knife.

Breaking: Court grants Naira Marley ₦2m bail

Naira Marley jailed

Nigerian musician, Azeez Fashola (a.k.a Naira Marley) on Monday pleaded not guilty to an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy, possession of counterfeit credit cards and fraud.

However, his bail request was not heard as he was ordered to be remanded in prison till 30 May.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged the musician before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Also mentioned in the charge is one Yad Isril, who is said to be at large.

Following the not-guilty plea, EFCC counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, requested the court to give a date for commencement of the musician’s trial.…

Mike Okonkwo football competition draws 72 teams

Organisers of the Mike Okonkwo football competition have revealed that 72 teams are participating in the 17th edition of the championship, which kicked off at the NIS pitch of the National Stadium, Lagos at the weekend.

The grassroots football tournament, which is organised by the Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), will end on August 31. It has 64 male and eight female teams competing for honours in the championship.

Court remands Naira Marley as artiste’s fraud trial begins

A Lagos Federal High Court yesterday remanded popular musician Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley in prison following his arraignment for alleged credit card fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) preferred an 11-count charge against him.

He pleaded not guilty before Justice Nicolas Oweibo, who adjourned hearing in his bail application till May 30 .

Justice Oweibo said he would be in  custody until his bail application is determined.

The offence, according to  Section 33 (2) of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015, carries seven years imprisonment.

Floods: Lagos urges calm as heavy rains pound city

Flooded streets, grinding traffic jam, homes with roofs blown off, uprooted trees and stuck vehicles.

Lagosians were struggling all yesterday to cope with the aftermath of an early morning downpour that drenched the city and its outskirts.

The storm that accompanied the downpour pulled down telecommunication masts, electricity poles and trees, some of which fell across major roads to further compound the traffic jam.

The state government urged residents to remain calm.
