WikiLeaks: Again, Chelsea Manning snubs US grand jury

Former US military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning said Sunday she again plans to refuse to testify before a grand jury about her leak of classified documents to WikiLeaks — even if it means returning to jail.

Manning, who served seven years in prison over her transfer of secret diplomatic and military documents, recently spent another two months in lock-up for contempt of court after refusing to answer the grand jury’s questions.

Federal prosecutors have for years been investigating WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and they apparently want Manning to testify about her dealings with him.

The Lagos State Deputy Governor-elect, Dr Obafemi Hamzat has lost his father, Oba
Mufutau Olatunji  Hamzat.

He was until his death on Sunday the traditional ruler of Afowowa Kingdom in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State. He was aged 86.

According to a family source who pleaded anonymity, his remains would be buried on Monday at his Yaya Abatan Street, Ogba residence according to Islamic rites.

Gunmen kill priest, 5 others during mass in Burkina Faso

Armed attackers killed a priest and five worshippers during mass on Sunday in an attack on a Catholic church in northern Burkina Faso.

The attackers – numbering between 20 and 30 – managed to trap some of the people inside then set fire to the church in the town of Dablo, about 200km from the capital Ouagadougou.

AfDB approves $200m for Nigeria’s electrification project

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved $200million to boost Nigeria’s electrification project, particularly the off-grid expansion being implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

A source in the bank, who did not want his name in print because he was not authorised to speak, said the project is expected to provide electricity to households, medium, small and micro enterprises (MSMEs) and public institutions in a least-cost and timely manner.

Akwa Ibom govt. appropriates ₦100m for polytechnic courses

Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, says the state government has earmarked ₦100 million as grant for the state-owned polytechnic to begin the process of securing full accreditation for its courses.

According to a statement by Mr Essien Uduese, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Emmanuel said this at the sixth convocation of the polytechnic held at its Ikot Osurua campus in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.

The governor was quoted to have also expressed delight that the National Board for Technical Education had granted approval to the polytechnic for a few outstanding courses.

CBN denies trending ‘stolen, missing money’ story

There is no  money  missing or stolen from the  Central Bank of Nigeria’s  coffers as reported in some section of the media, the  bank’s spokesman Isaac Okoroafor said.

Okoroafor, the Director Corporate Communications,  made the refutal in a statement on Sunday while reacting to a recent article and audio clips in which the CBN Governor and other senior officials were heard  discussing discrepancies in the bank’s accounts.

Justice Bulkachuwa not indicted – DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied that it indicted Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, Chairman, Presidential Election Tribunal, for bribery and corruption.

Public Relations Officer of the service, Mr Peter Afunanya, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, in reaction to reports of such indictment of the judge by DSS.

He urged the public to disregard the report, saying it only existed in the imagination of the authors.

Afunanya described the report as “unfortunate”, adding that making the falsehood public was unethical.

He said the service had commenced a detailed investigation into the controversies surrounding the publication.

Three sustain injury in Anambra petrol tanker accident

Three persons on Sunday sustained severe injuries when a fully laden petrol tanker lost control and crashed into a a Lexus Jeep before falling into a nearby valley at Amawbia, Awka in Anambra.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who was at the scene of the crash, reports that two of the injured persons were occupants of a Lexus Jeep while the third was the tanker driver.
