Tiger Woods, who made a stunning comeback from injury to win the Masters last month, is to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump on Monday.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Trump will bestow the award, the nation’s highest civilian honor, on the golfing great in the White House Rose Garden.

The 43-year-old Woods won the Masters in April for his 15th major title, his first since the 2008 US Open.

Mandela’s Robben Island cell door drawing sold for $112,575

A drawing by late South African president Nelson Mandela of the door of his prison cell on Robben Island — where he was held for 18 years — sold on Thursday in New York for $112,575.

“The Cell Door, Robben Island” — completed in 2002 by the Nobel peace laureate — exceeded the top end of the estimated range provided by Bonhams, which put its value at $60,000 to $90,000.

The wax pastel crayon drawing shows a few bars of the cell door and a key in the lock, sketched in purple.

Ganduje sacks Permanent Secretaries

All the permanent secretaries in Kano state civil service have been sacked with immediate effect by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

A statement signed by the Kano State Head of Service, Muhammad Awwal Na’iya on Thursday, said the action was in line with the present administration’s resolve to vigorously implement the reform initiatives embarked upon by the government.

132 firms offer to buy 14 cargoes of Nigerian crude monthly

132 local and international companies on Thursday offered to buy 14 cargoes of Nigerian crude oil monthly in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) 2019/2020 Direct Sale and Direct Purchase bid opening ceremony in Abuja.

The Group Managing Director (GMD) Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, who presided over the opening, said that the corporation would receive about 14 billion litres in a year as exchange for the crude.

“Well, we are looking about 14 cargoes a month kind of situation and about 14billion litres of in a year of products,” he said.

Bet9ja: Court jails man for gambling without paying

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 23-year-old painter, Oluwatobi Olaore, to 14 days’ imprisonment for playing N7,000 lotto (bet9ja) and refusing to pay.

The Magistrate, Mr Sam Obaleye, sentenced the painter who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Obaleye, however, gave the painter  an option of N20, 000 fine.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Adejoke Adebari, told the court that the painter  committed the offence on April 27 at 8:30p.m. at Ijaye area of Abeokuta.

Unemployment rate rising to 33.5 percent by 2020 – FG

The unemployment rate may increase from 23.1 percent to 33.5 percent by 2020, the Federal Government announced on Thursday.

The Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige disclosed this while declaring open a two-day workshop on breaking the resilience of high unemployment rate in the country in Abuja.

He described the incessant increase of unemployment in the country was alarming.

The Minister said the high unemployment rate of 23.1 per cent, and underemployment of 16.6 per cent presented by the National Bureau Statistics (NBS) in its 2019 report was alarming.
